The Black Swan theory (Swan Germ) Describes an event that is shocking to the observer, and after the event, people often rationalize it in an inappropriate way.

Y-combinator founder Paul Graham a few days ago a black Swan farming in North America set off a small controversy. PG's article mainly says that, according to YC's own experience, they have invested nearly 400 companies in 7 years, so far everyone's total selling value has reached 10 billion dollars. This sounds great, but only two of Dropbox and Airbnb contributed 7.5 billion.

So PG thinks that venture capital is not so much about investing in good companies as about finding rare diamonds in the sand. And these really can become home run companies, often at first it sounds a bit stupid idea, but it turns out to be a good idea. This kind of topic looks very inconspicuous on the surface, or the probability of success is low, so not many people want to compete with you. But once you are really successful, you will be able to dominate the market for lack of opponents. The success stories from Google, Facebook, Dropbox to Airbnb are actually similar concepts.

So PG thinks YC should be more conscious of taking risks and absorbing a group of people who want to "sound like a bad idea" to give themselves a chance to catch a few black swans.

PG's statement immediately caused another Super Angel, startups founder Dave McClure's big rebound, wrote a screw the Black Swans:ichiro are our model, not Barry Bonds. (Go to his black Swan: Suzuki Lang is our idol, not Barry.) )

As Dave writes, YC is the Yankees, looking for Barry Bonds and Rod, and then asking them to hit the home slam. On the contrary, 500 is the orb philosophy of the sports team, looking for a high barrier such as Suzuki, whether it is a hit or four bad, the best way is to squeeze the first base of the players.

Dave also made a further comparison between YC and 500, and he thought YC was looking for a highly skilled Hackers team, while 500 preferred the hustlers team, who desperately wanted to reach the array anyway. Most of YC's companies come from Silicon Valley or the United States, and Dave tends to run around the world, aggressively looking for the next Steve Nash and Ichiro.

Of course YC's philosophy has so far been successful, and 500 has only just begun 2 years, so what they call a new concept is only to dodge YC occupation of the field, or really can create better results, it may take 3-5 years to see. But the more important question is what is the philosophy of appworks compared to them?

If you ask me, I would say that we are looking for an engineer who wants to become an action family. What do you mean? Since it is a network business, the team must have a certain technical foundation. But in a relatively small market in Taiwan and an inactive environment, you have to be more flexible and more mobile than the Silicon Valley team. Because you have to attack the market, while trying to do everything from front to back to pull enough supplies, to support you step by step to expand the territory, until a firm day.

Of course the action will not be a day, so you have to learn how to be a hustler, and that is the most important part of the whole appworks plan. After two years of accumulation, we have learned how to teach a habit of hiding behind a computer, looking at Spec-writing engineers, gradually becoming a way to get out of the building, into the crowd, to try to convince the consumer, to persuade investors to join his action house. (In contrast, it's much harder to teach a hustler to write a program.) )
