1.4% of the world's population (the equivalent of the Germans) there are developmental barriers, such as the recent rise of the Ice Bucket Challenge fundraising campaign for the Frozen (ALS), closed syndrome (LIS), the famous British scientist Hawking is a frozen man. This kind of crowd often has the expression difficulty, the communication obstacle, because lacks the expression, its expected average life expectancy is 20 years less than the ordinary population. At present its only means of expression is enhanced or alternative communication equipment (AAC).
But the general AAC equipment often needs thousands of dollars, and its input speed is not fast enough, the equipment is also very cumbersome. So, on the 2014 Google Science Competition (2014 Google Sciences Fair, an online contest for 13-18-Year-old Youth), the 16-year-old Indian boy Arsh Shah Dilbagi determined to come up with a solution to the problem, his answer is- TALK, a low-cost, lightweight, efficient, universal AAC equipment.
Talk is a device that converts human respiration into letters, which are similar in principle to binary systems. The device requires the user to be able to emit two distinguishable expiratory sounds (intensity and time difference), and then use the MEMS Microphone to convert the two exhaled gases into electrical signals. The electrical signal is then processed using a microprocessor-the short exhalation will be indicated by a dot, the long exhalation is indicated by a dash, and then the Chengmores code is further parsed, and the code is then converted into a word/sentence sent to another microprocessor for synthesis and reading.
Talk has two working modes, one is the communication mode, the user can communicate with people in English, and the other is the instruction mode, in which the user can give special instructions or phrases with 9 different sounds. The device, according to inventors, is three times times more efficient than ordinary AAC, and it costs less than 100 dollars. His invention is now in the final lap of the Google Science competition.
Arsh plans to further optimize talk in the future. For example, to increase the automatic prediction function, and Google Glass integration, so that the frozen people of the world become better. By contrast, his efforts may be more meaningful than the ice bucket challenge.
