A spokesman for the Department of Health said that after the Department of Health had purchased five complementary pills from the constant market monitoring, the samples were handed over to the government laboratory for testing and the results showed that the mercury content of the proprietary Chinese medicine sample was about five times times the maximum standard, so the order was recycled. Initial enquiries revealed that proprietary Chinese medicines were made in the mainland and imported to Hong Kong by the Tong Ren Tong. This proprietary Chinese medicine is used in adults to regulate the body, but its composition should not contain mercury. The spokesman explained that acute mercury poisoning can cause inflammation of the mouth. If Mercury is ingested for a long time, it can cause nervous system and kidney damage. The Department of Health has not received any reports of discomfort after taking the proprietary Chinese medicine and the investigation is still in progress. Under the public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance, a person who sells a drug of a nature, substance or quality incompatible with the requirements of the purchaser is liable to a maximum penalty of a fine of $10,000 and imprisonment for three months. Upon completion of the investigation, the Department of Health will seek the advice of the Attorney general on prosecutions and refer the case to the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong to consider whether disciplinary action is required.
