Since 1984, NASA and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) have been collecting data on the Earth. The video we're sharing today is a high-resolution satellite image showing how our world has changed over the last 30 years ...
Since the 1970s, NASA and U.S. geographic surveys have begun to accumulate satellite images of every inch of Earth's surface, which is part of the LANDSAT project. 30 years on, these images record human changes to the Earth: the expansion of cities, the disappearance of lakes and forests, the emergence of man-made islands, especially in the Dubai of the Middle East.
If you fold these pictures into a book, you can flip through them to show amazing changes. Now, thanks to information technology, it all becomes very simple. NASA, USGS, Time, Google and the CREATE labs at Carnegie Mellon University have jointly released a plan to show the surface changes over the past 30 years with a GIF image.
The plan converts the millions of satellite images taken from 1984 to 2012 into continuous animation, which Google considers to be the most comprehensive surface change ever opened to the public.
