The Concept of Routing And Routing Table

Routing concept: Provides a mechanism for interconnecting heterogeneous networks to send a data packet from one network to another. Routing is to know the path information sent by the IP data packet

The concept of the routing table: the information needed to perform the selection of the verse forwarding path is contained in a table entry of the router.

(Function: Find an optimal transmission path for each data frame passing through the router, and effectively transmit the data to the destination site)

   Which parts of the routing table are composed and what are the functions of each part?

 

1) Destination network address: used to indicate the destination logical network or subnet address that the IP packet will reach.

 

2) Mask: Together with the destination address, it indicates the network segment address where the destination host or router is located. After the destination address and the network mask are "logically ANDed", the network segment address where the destination host or router is located can be obtained.

 

3) Next hop address: the port address of the adjacent router connected to the router carrying the routing table. The next address is also called the gateway address of the router.

 

4) The physical port sent: the interface through which the data packet leaves the router to the destination.

 

5) The source of routing information: The routing table can be manually established by the administrator (static routing table), or it can be automatically established and maintained by the routing protocol.

 

6) Routing priority: It determines the priority of routing information from different routing sources.

 

7) Metric: It indicates the cost that a corresponding piece of logistics may cost. Among the same routes, the route with the same priority is considered to be the best route with the smallest metric.
