Cloud computing will be the next generation computing platform, the development of cloud computing will drive the development of geographic information system which is closely related to computational science. This paper summarizes the characteristics of cloud computing by means of literature analysis, cloud GIS connotation, key technology and scientific problems, pointed out that cloud GIS is the use of cloud infrastructure to obtain large-scale computing capacity to solve the huge amount of spatial data in GIS distributed storage, processing task partitioning, query retrieval, interoperability and virtualization and other key scientific issues, Improve the capability of data processing and management in GIS, and provide high performance processing technology for all kinds of GIS services of compute-intensive and data-intensive. Its basic connotation is the cloud characteristic of spatial data, and the characteristics of cloud computing in spatial data management. At the same time, it is pointed out that cloud GIS will completely break through the existing "professional circle" of GIS, realize the revolutionary breakthrough of GIS, and enlarge its market scale greatly. Then, this paper introduces the cloud GIS platform, points out the advantages and disadvantages in the development of cloud GIS. Finally, the research progress of cloud GIS in China is prospected from 3 aspects of cloud GIS model technology development trend, application demand and education specialty demand.
