In a theme called "The Cloud Grows Up" at the annual VentureBeat CloudBeat summit, VentureBeat founder and managing editor Matt Marshall described Pivotal CEO Paul Maritz as saying "he is arguably the most cloud powered operating system Visionary ".
As a former VMware CEO, Maritz explained in his opening remarks why he left the IT hottest VMware, and went to a new, untested brand company.
According to him, Maritz's wealth of experience, interests and insights in the cloud development of the future make him an important leader in Pivotal One.
Maritz said: "Most discussions about the cloud today are calculated first." He points out that this includes the polemics between presetting data centers or the cloud.
These are interesting questions, he believes. "He predicts that in the next five to 10 years, the IT industry will move in the direction of" a whole new generation of applications that drive business value. "
He asserted: "These applications can only be implemented in a cloud-like fashion."
Last fall, Maritz stepped down as VMware CEO, EMC CEO Pat Gelsinger took over, and Maritz turned to lead Pivotal.
The brand, Pivotal One, debuted in April with the goal of bringing consumer-familiar cloud features to the enterprise space in the form of PaaS. It relies heavily on open source technologies, including Spring, Java and Cloud Foundry.
Maritz mentioned several previously acquired companies, such as Greenplum, a software and applications division. He explained that Pivotal's cloud-facing operating system was developed "by experts experienced in using these technologies, devices, and cost-effective storage options to solve data problems."
With the collaboration with General Electric announced in June, Pivotal's capabilities in the enterprise arena have been significantly enhanced and its visibility increased.
Pivotal will deliver a new "cloud-neutral" platform and solution for GE through its Hadoop, Cloud Foundry and memory technologies.
Although the exact landing time was not disclosed, Maritz said the Pivotal One will be ready by the end of the year.
But just like the buzzwords of Big Data and the Internet of Things, the cloud just touches the surface.
For example, Maritz said that if Snowden had leaked the NSA file over the past few months, the cloud would not be dominated by the U.S. data center.
That is, data is saved and accessed from multiple data centers worldwide, including cloud vendors and services. Maritz concludes: "It will be and must be a cloudy world."
