Xinhua United Nations November 23 (Xinhua Lin Jong) United Nations 23rd in New York headquarters to hold a special event to commemorate the upcoming "International Day for the Elimination of violence against women" and "United Nations Trust Fund to Eliminate Violence against women," the 15 anniversary of the establishment. Ban Ki-moon called on the international community to promote young people to play a role in eliminating violence against women.

Ban said that violence against women and girls is widespread in many forms and worldwide, including rape, domestic violence, workplace harassment, school abuse, female genital mutilation and sexual violence in armed conflict. He noted that the prevalence of such violence, both in developing and developed countries, was alarming and was one of the most important obstacles to women's full equality.

Ban stressed that living without violence is a fundamental and inalienable right of women and girls, as well as rights under international human rights and humanitarian law. "The challenge is to ensure that the ' 0 tolerance ' concept is deeply rooted," he said. To this end, a healthy male role model must be established throughout society, especially with young people, to encourage male youth to become advocates. Too many young men are still growing up under the influence of stereotypical male stereotypes. Talking to friends and companions about violence against women and girls and taking action to stop this phenomenon has helped to prevent this deep-rooted cycle of behaviour generation. ”

Ban Ki-moon called on governments around the world to guide young people to play an active role in eliminating violence against women and to work together to build a more just, peaceful and equitable world.

Ban said that many activities aimed at eliminating violence against women were supported by the United Nations Trust Fund for the Elimination of violence against women. Since its inception in 1996, the Fund has provided grants worth USD 77 million to 339 projects in 126 countries and regions. He said the fund has received more than 2,500 applications this year and has asked for nearly 1.2 billion dollars in funding. Ban Ki-moon called on the international community to help the United Nations meet this huge demand.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 1999 to set November 25 "International Day for the Elimination of violence against women". The General Assembly invited Governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations to organize commemorative events on this day to raise public awareness of the problem.
