for many people, many of the High-tech concept cars in science fiction films are getting closer to us, and we've seen many future "smart cars" prototypes or mass-production models at the Las Vegas ces show recently.

However, Ai Huasin Ulf Ewaldsson, senior vice president and chief technology officer of Ericsson and Group technology and portfolio management, believes that these so-called "smart cars" are still a long way from entering the real life of people, Because most of the functionality of Smart cars relies on 5G networks, the network is not expected to be completed until at least 2020.

Earlier this month, Ericsson first showcased the company's newest "Connected Vehicle Cloud" service. It is reported that this service will be designed to provide intelligent vehicles with a set of information display, entertainment, service reservations and other functions in a comprehensive vehicle platform. At the same time, Ericsson said it had reached a partnership with US mobile operator At&t and Volvo Group.

"Ericsson Cheleng Links drivers, passengers to all stakeholders such as carmakers and third parties, giving them unprecedented capabilities," said Ken Durant, director of innovation and business development in Ericsson (Kendurand). Ericsson Cheleng will help drive the growing automotive ecosystem to collaborate seamlessly to help us meet challenges, enhance synergies, and capture new business opportunities. ”

However, Ericsson believes that the more sci-fi features such as self-driving cars will need to rely on future 5G networks to be a reality. Ai Huasin that the advanced automotive technology associated with 5G will be commercially available for at least 2020 years.

Ai Huasin said that after the 5G network became a reality, future vehicles would be able to get early warning before a collision could occur, or even allow vehicles to be automatically driven to their destinations without being driven. And, at this CES, we've seen the physical display of relevant technologies.

"We currently have a network of services that do not guarantee the quality of these future automotive services, the current 4G network treatment of all data processing principle is ' first out ', but this network has at least 20 milliseconds of latency (3G network minimum delay is 35 milliseconds). Therefore, the most critical point of these on-board applications is to be able to accurately predict and control the network latency. It should be noted that the network services used by future vehicles may need to be prioritized for some data streams depending on the functionality. For example, if a vehicle's real-time warning, a vehicle control system, and a child's data request for a streaming movie on the back of the vehicle are conflicting, future networks need to be able to differentiate them and prioritize more important data requests. Eywa said.

Of course, in addition to the network's prioritization and smaller latency, 5G networks need to have the ability to communicate with applications at different service levels. Ai Huasin believes that, in this respect, the recent emergence of software definition networks (Software tabbed receptacle, hereinafter referred to as "SDN") technology may be a fairly good solution. SDN is a new network innovation architecture, its core technology openflow by separating the control surface of the network equipment from the data plane, which realizes the flexible control of the network traffic, and also provides a good platform for the core network and the innovation of the application.

Although several of the factors mentioned above may make us uncertain about the future of smart cars, according to Ai Huasin revealed that the industry has been in the development of a part of the need for 5G network can be the first vehicle technology to achieve. However, he admits that these services, which currently do not need to connect to the network, will eventually be covered by the network.
