Three for young people to share

Abstract: A few days ago invited to do an internal speech at Fudan University. This is my first time to go to school to share, but also for the first time, to sum up and share some of their experiences and experiences. I will now record the contents of the speech and share my experiences in my studies and career development so as to help more young people.

My first sharing: Accumulate, always be confident

I am now the vice president of LinkedIn, president of China. By some standards, I can say that I have achieved some success. Of course, I personally do not think so, I think my career has just getting better. Those who say I'm successful will only measure with the current height. Less than 41 years old to do the present position. However, if I draw my career into a curve, this is a curve that has experienced a gentle rise or even stagnation over a very long period of time, accelerating only in the last four or five years. This is a profound process. I asked my colleagues to draw such a horizontal timeline in accordance with the information on my LinkedIn profile. This is the curve I have been studying and working for more than 20 years. All three of my sharing started around this curve.

As you can see, I was 32 when I joined Google in 2005. At that time, I was still an engineer. In a sense, my career has undergone a very long process of accumulation. I am studying in Nankai University from 1992 to 1996. From a traditional perspective, I should say not a good student: I did not get a scholarship, did not have a cadre of students, there is no hiking, marathon feat. However, my college life is still very substantial. Talking about love, doing business, took two bachelor's degree, took a TOEFL and GRE, graduated from undergraduate, very lucky to get the UCLA scholarship, study abroad. To sum up, I did not do something with the crowd, but I do not have time, I know my ability, I always maintain self-confidence.

When I arrived in the United States, the impact and change I received was very great. After four years of university chaos, for the first time, I felt my interest in learning. I began to love reading and started learning from my heart. Of course, a summary later, probably because the United States textbooks are more expensive, more than 100 dollars a move, so reluctant to read. Of course this is a joke. Perhaps more is the pressure of the United States alone, gave myself a lot of momentum. The other is the kind of very good academic atmosphere, it is easy to own infection.

Because the middle of a professional turn, get a master's degree, I am 27 years old. At the age of 27, work began, and compared to those Americans who started work at the age of 21 at the age of 21, the starting line has lagged far behind. Later, there have been several companies, down-to-earth programming, rigorous research technology, a long time is many years, the standard American code farming. Far from the so-called success is still far away. Later returned to China, change track to do business. Then come out from Google, start doing glutinous rice net. Up to less than ten people from the previous management, to manage more than 2,500 people at once. Up to now, becoming the world's top technology companies executives, all of a sudden getting better.

In retrospect, many seemingly trivial endeavors before us are a process of accumulating energy and preparation. They are both an accumulation process and an indispensable one:

To do the background of chemical research, let me know the scientific share of the rigorous;

Engineers background, let me develop the habit of logical thinking; management of the study, so I planted very early very early concept of enterprise management and seeds;

The experience of the United States alone has given me a lot of pressure to resist.

Obstacles to early language and difficulties in integrating into American culture make me cherish more about the present state and the present life.

Entrepreneurship forced four years, but also on their own management of bandwidth, on their own tough, on their own tolerance, on their own control of people rose to a high level;

Seemingly unrelated to these experiences, it is precisely for the future to make a better development.

Everyone's schooling and career, there will be some high and low, some people are more fortunate, fame very early. Some people may not be so lucky, such as me, will experience a very long period of development. These are not terrible, the most important thing is to maintain self-confidence, confidence in their own ability and future.

My second share: Do not confused, grasp the moment

There was a young subordinate who talked to me before he resigned to study abroad. He said to me: D brother, I am very confused. I asked him why? He said that boring, open social media, are all kinds of negative, the community is full of negative energy. Very confused about their own future, in the end what they are suitable for, do not understand. Choose to study abroad after a few years work, but also a kind of escape, in short, very confused. Ask me if I have any good antidote. I thought for a moment and said to him: First of all, this society is not that bad. If we look seriously, there are still more positive energies in the community, or we will move in the right direction. Second, worrying about our country and cherishing the people is not something we must do, and these can not be left to us. For you, the most important thing for young people like you is not to look at the next 10 years, but more importantly, grasp the present moment. When you are in a daze, pick up a book. Trance is a waste of time. However, reading is increasing knowledge.

My personal experience is also true. The first time in the life of the first flight, is the 22-year-old came to Los Angeles alone. English is not good enough, looks handsome enough, no father can fight, no green card. I have confused too. Later, after work, often confused. However, looking back now, good reading habits have given me a lot of energy. I remember reading the first three years in the United States, never seen a movie, did not fall in love. Work 6 days a week, only one day off on Sunday. What to do when you're resting? Go to a bookstore open to Starbucks near the school. There, a cup of coffee, a few books, waiting for an afternoon. Reading is my break. At least at that time I feel very down-to-earth, I feel that there is no idle time.

What I want to share here is not reading, but to grasp the moment of this attitude. You can not understand the future, you can imitate, but rather than confused, it is better to grasp the moment, over fulfilled. There will be surprises waiting for you in the future.

My Third Share: Take a few big decisions

Life is more ordinary and accumulation. I have seen some people who plan very hard and can not wait to perfect their own life planning. But in fact, the plan often can not keep up with changes. Most people may be like me, ordinary life. However, it is very important to grasp several major decisions in life. God is fair, and the chances for everyone are similar, either morning or evening. The key is whether you are ready to take the initiative or passively take control of the opportunity when it occurs. Here to share with you some major decisions in my life.

1, to the United States

Before the junior year, I did not want to go to the United States. At that time there is not so much to go abroad, especially undergraduate graduation abroad. I am in college, not a typical good student, English is also general. In her junior year, my father went to the United States for study and came back to describe the United States to me. Suddenly aroused the desire to go to the United States to study. That is a point. I remember that three years of winter vacation, a holiday, in addition to thirty and one or two days, are spent in the dorm alone. Read English, practice listening. The result seized the opportunity. TOFEL and GRE test can be, went out smoothly.

2, for professional

First started at UCLA Environmental Chemistry. Mentor is 50 years old, very kind, very good to me. Gave me a scholarship, and let me directly read a doctorate. I am progressing academically fast. Good grades, the progress of the experiment is also very smooth. Two or three academic papers have been published in two years and passed the exams for PhD candidates. At that rate, I was about 27 years old and would be a Ph.D., then a postdoctoral professor. . . A seemingly very smooth road is waiting for me. However, I slowly discovered. Learning does not seem to be what I want: take more money, recruit more students, write more essays, get more money and go round again and again. I have a strong interest in computers and have spent a long time brewing on the BBS of Sitonglifang and have become moderators of study abroad forums. And then built a self-learning website, specifically for students who want to go abroad to provide information and help. So I started to listen to several computer department classes. Later, resolutely decided to change the profession. This is a very painful decision. On the one hand, it can be said that the mentor is a betrayal. On the one hand, he is giving up his doctorate. Until today, I still feel very proud if the two words can be added after the name. On the other hand, Also give up the full scholarship, life will be very tight. Still clearly remember, when I proposed to leave, the teacher said to me: you think about it again. You do not know how much potential you have on your academic path. You can get a doctor's decision in less than two years. Clearly remember the day I left the lab, the teacher's pale hair and disappointment, he said to me: I wish you an early realization of the dream of a millionaire in Silicon Valley. Until today, I still have no courage to face him again.

3, join Google

Four years after programming the two smaller start-ups, I chose to join a big company to get more of it: Yahoo Overture. Shortly after joining Yahoo, one day, found colleagues are together, talking about a product, turned out to be Google on the line of Gmail. Actually online email can do so dazzle, capacity can be so big. Later, another similar experience was that Google launched a map. These two things touched me very much. Actually there is such a company so innovative, so Niubi. I think I am a very good engineer, how to prove that I am strong? Join Google! Of course, there is a reason you want to join Google, that is, I saw my ceiling in the United States, I want to go back to development, to do more Big thing. At that time, Yahoo! had entered China and did not develop well and did not have a chance to return to China. But Google has not yet entered China, there are opportunities. So, began a hard interview, finally got his wish moved to Silicon Valley in 2005, joined Google. Now it seems that this is a very correct decision. A few months after I joined, I announced that I had joined Google, so I quickly joined the landing team and returned to China.

4, joined the Thousand Oaks Group, entrepreneurial glutinous rice net

Almost 5 years at Google. There is also some understanding of the surging Internet in China. It's time to change. At that time there are two ways, one is to start an independent business and the other is to join a local company. Independent entrepreneurship was quickly vetoed, mainly because they were not yet ready. Join a local company, Tencent, Baidu and Google such a big company does not have an essential difference. I am going to a more local company. Everyone at that time is very fire. So take the initiative to introduce a friend, and talk about a boat and Chen once, I feel good: thousands of oak size, there will be more space; Thousand Oaks have a lot of money promised me to go in, will allow me to start an internal business. So the salary did not talk about, decided to join the 1000 oak and soon began to create glutinous rice net. Now I think it was fooled. Of course this is a joke. At that time, many of my Google colleagues were thinking about other opportunities. However, what they looked at was more immediate benefits: less 1.5 million annual salary and fewer 100 teams. . . I did not think about that at that time. What I think is more about the potential of development and future space. Wages, not the generous portion of the stock Google gives, is enough to halve the cash portion alone. Now, in retrospect, the four years of making glutinous rice net are the four fastest years I grew up. The management bandwidth, the experience of starting a business and the understanding of the Internet in China can not be bought at these prices.

5, join LinkedIn

The company sold to Baidu. Another important decision to pass. Is to continue to do so, overcome the immediate difficulties, the glutinous rice net in Baidu system bigger and stronger. Is to choose an independent business, and then do a major event. Or other options. This time the chance of LinkedIn appeared. LinkedIn and I can say love at first sight. There are many reasons why I join LinkedIn. Now just want to talk about a reason. At this stage of my career, the success of mere financial success can not have a great deal of satisfaction. I hope I can exert even greater influence through my own efforts. At the same time as individuals succeed, they do something for the community for young people and have some influence. This is where LinkedIn is most attractive to me. We have been to many multinational companies in the Asia Pacific headquarters. There are many Japanese, Indians, Singaporeans and Americans in management, but not many Chinese. Is it because we do not have good professional managers? We have a lot of good professionals, we have a lot of smart young people. We are more lack of a chance, the lack of an international platform. Through our efforts, it is my dream to be a successor of the Chinese workplace elites.

When the opportunity arises, I grasp, made a relatively correct decision. There is really not too much change in life to decide too much, but a few of the most significant decisions are very important.
