According to Gartner's survey, the global public cloud service market is expected to grow 18.5% this year, with a total revenue of 131 billion U.S. dollars. Last year's total global revenue was 111 billion U.S. dollars. Infrastructure as a service, including cloud computing, storage and printing, continues to grow rapidly and is expected to grow by more than 47%.
"The continued growth in the cloud services market is the result of cloud services being used in production systems and workloads, and in addition to that, research and development and test applications are the biggest source of public cloud services today," said Ed Anderson, research manager at Gartner. Gartner numbers and channel business experience basically match.
"There is no doubt that we are still in the early stages of the cloud infrastructure adoption curve. As for the consumption of public clouds, such as the SaaS cloud infrastructure used by consumers, Gartner numbers are in line with what we have seen," Jonathan Sharp, vice president of management services provider Latisys, said. "But we think the final actual figure may be slightly higher than 18.5%."
According to the Gartner report, cloud advertising, cloud business process services and cloud application services are the fastest-growing sub-markets with market share of 48%, 28% and nearly 15% respectively. IaaS share of 5.5%, management and security services 2.8%, PaaS only 1%.
Regionally, the fastest-growing regions are the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The report also pointed out that China has become a market with large share and rapid growth. North America remains the largest market for cloud services. From now until 2016, it accounts for nearly 60% of projected spending. Western Europe is the second-largest market, accounting for 24% of cloud spending over the same period.
"IT service providers, especially those focused on delivering cloud services or related services, must consider these largely mature markets in disproportionate proportions if they want to take a leadership role in the growth of global cloud services," Anderson said. "Likewise, emerging Asia-Pacific, Greater China and Latin American markets are also important consideration areas for IT service providers looking to generate revenue in these high-growth markets, especially in Latin America and Greater China."
