Trusted computing is the foundation of cloud security

At the RSA conference in 2011, I interviewed Mr. Tom Quillin, director of Intel's Network security technology and planning, for a wide range of user-focused security issues. When it comes to whether the idea of trusted computing can be incorporated into cloud computing to keep the cloud platform secure, Mr. Tom Quillin's answer is quite certain, and in his view, trusted computing is the basis for securing the cloud computing platform.





Reporter: Please introduce Mr. Tom to the work currently under the responsibility of Intel.





Tom: My main job at Intel is to plan for new security technologies or products, including servers, PCs, and smartphones.





Reporter: Cloud computing applications based on mobile terminals are becoming an application trend of it in the future, what new challenges will the transformation of this application model bring to network security? What does Intel do in the face of this challenge?





Tom: About Cloud security, we are constantly sorting and refining related technologies, which is the first challenge Intel faces. The second challenge, we have to find new ways to integrate mobile terminal applications into the cloud computing platform, where Intel is more focused on the security of the server and PC areas, is now trying to extend security to the mobile terminal area. Intel is still relatively backward in terms of mobile development, but as intel increases its commitment to mobile terminal security, I believe Intel will be able to make a difference in this area in the future.





Reporter: Intel has been acquiring McAfee for some time, what is McAfee technology to help Intel secure deployment and planning in the cloud era?





Tom:mcafee is currently operating as an independent subsidiary, but McAfee's products do help Intel plan for future cloud security markets. We are looking to integrate McAfee's technology into the Intel Cloud security solution and find technically viable ways to communicate.





Reporter: In terminal security, Intel has VPRO technology, but VPRO technology can adapt to the cloud computing era terminal security requirements?





Tom: Cloud security also involves terminal security, VPRO can help users to control and manage terminals, VPRO contains technology can also help the cloud bottom of the hardware platform to better prevent the occurrence of various attacks.





Reporter: This morning you mentioned to the security into the hardware layer, how far has intel been?





Tom: Intel has actually been investing in hardware-based product security. 10 years ago Intel presented a trusted computing that integrates security into the processor, which is more robust and safe to manage and protect. In recent years, we are also developing and improving processor virtualization technology, so that the Intel's processor can better adapt to the future cloud computing platform, so when the virtual machine problems can be more secure to achieve isolation.





Reporter: Can the idea of trusted computing be integrated into cloud computing to ensure the security of cloud computing platforms?





Tom: I think the trusted computing is an important basis to ensure the security of the cloud platform, the idea of trusted computing into the cloud platform can make the cloud platform more stable and solid. Reporter: In recent years, Intel through a series of acquisitions of software vendors to make itself into a seemingly less "hard" company, then for security is focused on hardware or software problems, how do you think?





Tom: I think security always depends on hardware to improve performance, but this is not an absolute argument, we hope that in the future we will provide a security product portfolio based on hardware and software to optimize the security of the system from the two levels of hardware and software.





Reporter: I think cloud security does not keep up with the development needs of cloud applications, how do you think about this problem





Tom: When users think something is a problem, Intel sees the problem as a rare opportunity. We believe that solving the cloud security problem is indeed a major challenge for industry manufacturers. Solving cloud security problems requires industry peers and government agencies to work together to resolve cloud security issues and create a carefree cloud platform for users.





Reporter: You today's speech theme is "yearning for worry-free calculation", standing in the user's perspective this yearning is too ideal, why are you so confident?





Tom: For today's IT application environment users are still full of worry. But I believe that with the cooperation of the security agencies and the government, there will be a more secure IT application environment in the future. In the long run IT applications will move toward a more secure and hassle-free direction.





Reporter: Many people think that China's IT development has lagged behind many countries and regions, but the cloud has given China and foreign companies to go hand-in-hand with the opportunity, do not know whether Mr. Tom also see this?





Tom: I think China has a huge opportunity to be a leader to influence the direction of security development or to make its own demands, including the integration of trusted computing into the cloud platform. Therefore, Intel is looking forward to working with local Chinese manufacturers to build safety products with Chinese characteristics.
