Introduction: Perhaps you think Ubuntu is only for the desktop, and many of the reports on Ubuntu are focused on consumer-centric design, such as unity, the design that spans phones, tablets, TVs and PCs, and so on. No matter how you look at it, Ubuntu is becoming the new generation overlord of the data center.

Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth says Ubuntu is now robbing Red Hat Enterprise Linux of living space.

Perhaps you think Ubuntu is just for the desktop, and many of the reports on Ubuntu are focused on consumer-centric design, such as the introduction of unity, the design that spans phones, tablets, TVs and PCs, and so on.

No matter how you look at it, Ubuntu is now emerging as a new generation of corporate data centers. Many companies that once adopted Rhel are turning to Ubuntu.

This is not groundless, according to W3tech statistics, since July 2011, Ubuntu in the Web server domain has surpassed red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).

Web services are public and open, says Mark Shuttleworth, a trend in many emerging areas, such as cloud computing and large data areas.

What he said is likely to be right. As far as I know, Ubuntu is the top-tier operating system for 120,000 of users on Amazon's EC2 cloud computing platform. The CentOS compiled by Rhel has only 23,000 users.

The Battle of the Overlord

' We've added a quality control system to the process of building Ubuntu, both for canonical and for the community, ' Mark Shuttleworth wrote on his blog. We offer the best developers and the latest development tools designed to build the best cloud computing experience.

Looking ahead, many OpenStack users will deploy Ubuntu on their public cloud platform. A large number of system administrators and developers will join and contribute to the Ubuntu camp.

Will Ubuntu become another red hat? Although Ubuntu is now a heavyweight in enterprise computing, its size cannot be compared to Red hat. Red hat is the world's first open source vendor, with over 1 billion annual revenues. At the enterprise level, the canonical company is not as strong as red Hat.

Still, Canonical's flagship product, Ubuntu, is being accepted by more and more vendors and applied to the business environment. I believe that the future of the data center hegemony battle will occur between Ubuntu and red Hat, not SuSE or Oracle. (Zhang Zhiping/compiling)
