The 192 Member States of UPU celebrated World Postal Day on October 9, the day of the founding of the UPU in 1874 in the Swiss capital, Bern.
At the 140 anniversary of the founding of UPU on October 9 this year, UPU's director-General, Bishar Hussein, urged governments to continue to invest in the national postal network, enabling both citizens and businesses to continue to benefit from this vital and affordable public service.
There are 640,000 post offices around the world, they are continuing to provide traditional letter and parcel services, and many also provide postal finance services. Although the letter product still accounts for 40% of total postal revenue, the delivery of letters worldwide is declining at a rate of 3% to 4% per year.
At the same time, due to the booming internet and e-commerce, postal parcels are increasing every year, between 2006 and 2012, domestic and international parcels are growing at a rate of more than 5% a year worldwide, and the weight of international mail is increasing, since 2011, The weight of international mail increased by 10% a year, which fully demonstrated the impact of E-commerce. By the end of this year, UPU estimates, global Cross-border E-commerce sales will reach $1.5 trillion trillion a year.
The UPU Director-general, Saddam Hussein, stressed that the global postal network is a huge asset for extending the reach of the Internet, benefiting citizens, businesses and governments alike.
UPU and its member States are adopting new strategies to adapt to the development of the Internet and electronic commerce, including making it easier to return goods purchased online, and UPU has established an electronic customs declaration system that enables the postal and customs administrations to deal more efficiently with international parcels.
It is reported that only 32% of the world's population now connected to the Internet, in sub-Saharan Africa, 80% of the post offices in small cities and rural areas. UPU stressed that Governments must attach importance to making the post office connected to the Internet in order to send people access to key information communication, financial and other services.
