US cloud computing price war breaks out

GCE just removed the beta label and announced a 4% reduction in the price of the On-demand virtual machine. As industry watchers predict, the US cloud computing price war has erupted.

In Thursday, GCE removed the beta label and announced that it would reduce the on-demand virtual machine price by 4% (Standard GCE VM 0.132 USD/h, before being 0.138 USD/h). In less than 12 hours, AWS announced a 26% reduction on the Windows virtual Rogue (VMs) on demand.

Like every price cut, AWS typically chooses a subset of services in IaaS to do promotions. This is the virtual machine, and the choice is the Windows product. The Windows operating system, which is the default standard for Sgt VM, drops from USD 0.115/hour to 0.091 USD/h, down 21%. Other Windows VM Type prices are also falling. In some cases, the price will be higher in high memory (now $0.51 per hour) and high CPU (now $0.225 per hour).

In time, AWS seems to be responding to GCE's price cuts. And from the previous Google Engineers blog, you can see the Gae can pay for the use of GCE. But a gold support package is needed, costing 400 dollars a month for 4/7 telephone support and consulting services. If you compare the two services, AWS is cheaper, but from the performance you see, the GCE is stronger. Its underlying VM contains 3.75GB memory and 420GB hard drives. The AWS Standard VM is 1.7GB memory and 160GB hard drive. In high capacity (or high performance) virtual machines, the two are the same.

But more analysts believe that AWS's price cuts for Windows VMs are aimed at opening up the corporate market. Or, AWS is more concerned about Windows Azure. In fact, AWS offers many Microsoft products and services. For example, a few weeks ago, adding new drivers promoted instance performance and quantity to better support SQL services.

Business Insider recently reported that Amazon is recruiting more sales reps to drive cloud sales in the corporate market, which is clearly faster than other cloud services companies.

More than that, Profitbricks, another cloud service competitor, expanded its maximum instance to a super instance-extending from cores and 196GB RAM to 62 cores, 240GB RAM. In its view, cloud computing has come to 2.0 stages. Profitbrick customers through "62 cores, 240GB RAM instances can enjoy a larger scale at a lower cost, better speed and performance."
