The company said the average price of its DRAM chips rose 16% in the third quarter. These chips are mainly used in PCs, accounting for 39% of last year's revenue.

Jefferies & Co Analysts said in a study before the earnings report that insufficient memory supplies had driven prices higher this year, with dram prices rising more than one times. For the rest of the year, memory prices are expected to remain stable or rise further. Pacific Crest Nomura analyst Monica Jiagi (Monika garg) says chip suppliers are switching production capacity to supply dram to handsets, as chip sales for PCs fall. Analysts said the US light could also benefit from the increase in the use of DRAM chips in mobile phones and the increased focus on Low-power laptops launched by Intel, Microsoft and PC makers.
