Chuck Romine, head of it labs, says the department will face a new focus on big data and mobile technology this year and will continue to study cybersecurity and cloud computing Chack Roming.

Luo last fall replaced the retired it lab supervisor Zita Foulani (Cita Furlani). "NIST will enhance its work on standards, interoperability, reliability and the availability of large data technologies," he told Information Weekly. Governments and the private sector continue to collect large datasets to help implement more targeted marketing and improve government regulation.

Luo says NIST has many implications for big data. He noted that the agency had been involved for many years in analysing how the federal government and the private sector could better manage large amounts of data. For example, in 2009, NIST helped to publish a report entitled "Power to control digital data".

Luo says that moving forward inexorably is another new priority for NIST. The work includes setting new standards for wireless network technology.

Other new projects being studied by Luo are a strategic planning process. In this process, he plans to interact with other institutions and the private sector to help determine which technologies are the focus of future development. Despite these new focus areas, Luo said he would continue to carry out many of his predecessor's priorities. ' Many of the things that Luo left behind in this institution are in good shape, ' he said.

Luo says NIST is responsible for issuing the network security standards that federal agencies must comply with under the Federal Information Security Administration Act. Network security will continue to be a priority for NIST in 2012. Cyber-security will not go away in the foreseeable future, he said.

For example, NIST is rapidly creating a network security Excellence Center. This effort will enhance NIST's collaboration with other institutions and the private sector in developing technologies related to network security. The center will provide experimental programs for the private sector, which wants to move forward in the forefront of cyber-security innovation.

NIST also plays a key role in the national strategy for cyber-space credible identities. The government-industry joint project aims to foster the development and application of more powerful identity and identity technologies on the Internet. In the first area, NIST recently issued a request for recommendations for 5 to 8 pilot projects. These projects can last for two years and will assess issues such as interoperability and availability. According to Luo, NIST will actively promote the pilot identity project.

Cloud computing is another effort by NIST to play an active role recently. The organization recently led the development of a shared security identity process FedRAMP for cloud services. NIST has also been developing cloud standards, focusing on issues of interoperability, privacy, security, reliability, and availability. (Compiled/Populus euphratica)
