Basile says violin memory has produced four generations of products because it knows what Toshiba can offer. As the only U.S. investment in violin memory and for years the only strategic technology investment, "if you do business with us, then you will also be Toshiba's business partner."

Of course, violin Memory's chances of a successful listing are not affected by Fusion-io, a competitor who sells solid-state components that can directly access the server and act as a high-performance cache layer, and fusion-io revenues have increased significantly.

As Basile explains, everyone involved in the flash drive is catching up to the trend of falling flash prices, with giants like EMC, Oracle and Hewlett-Packard entering the field.
