"Tenkine Server channel July 21" Gartner recently released its Magic Quadrant for x86 server virtualization this year, and VMware and Microsoft continue to dominate the open source solution. The Gartner Magic Quadrant is focused solely on the commercial support version of the hypervisor-whether it is open source or closed, and ignores the wide range of pure open source options available today.
VMware continues to hold a sizeable market share and uses its ESXi virtual machine management program and vsphere and vcenter management tools to have a popular Word-of-mouth advantage in the customer community. In recent years, however, Microsoft has relied on its Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management program and the System Center console to sweep the ground. According to Gartner, about 70% of the Enterprise data Center x86 workloads are already running in virtualization, and VMware is encountering a degree of hindrance in driving its server virtualization business.
The growth of Hyper-V and KVM has created a lot of competitive pressure on VMware, the latter belonging to a set of open source hypervisor, dominated by Red Hat, Canonical, IBM, and other vendors who want to get another set of options outside of open source Xen management programs. It is worth mentioning that Xen is currently being applied to Amazon Web Services, Rackspace, and the SoftLayer public cloud.
For new workloads that are about to join the virtualization camp, VMware's market share and impact are less pronounced. The reason for this is simple: Microsoft is challenging VMware in terms of price. As long as you buy a version of the Windows Server datacenter and run it on your own server device, the price includes the right to use Hyper-V virtualization technology without any restrictions. If you support the use of Windows workloads, you can save a lot of operating costs through Hyper-V. Of course, the premise is that users are willing to transplant applications, and hyper-V can really meet the actual functional needs of everyone.
Jie is now shifting focus to the cloud level, hoping that by tweaking its xenserver to better support cloudplatform--, a commercial-level version of the Cloudstack cloud Controller, As the preferred virtual machine hypervisor for your own XenDesktop Desktop virtualization tool. XenServer is praised for its free use, but the customer needs to pay for the support contract.
Red Hat has made notable progress in the field of KVM commercialization, but still failed to reach the top right-hand corner of the leader Quadrant. Red Hat still doesn't have the ability to challenge VMware head-on, but it already has the technical resources of KVM, OpenStack Cloud Controller and its own middleware and management tools. They are also likely to further extend the KVM to the first deployed cloud installation environment in the future. Red Hat Enterprise Linux's huge customer base should help with the popularity of KVM, although most rhel workloads are still running under bare-metal mode.
Edit summary: With this Gartner x86 server virtualization quadrant, we see VMware and Microsoft as major players, and Microsoft is becoming the biggest market threat to VMware. At the same time, Si Jie and red hat still wandering in the niche market, but with the popularity of OpenStack, both market share is expected to be promoted.
