The virtualization giant, VMware, today confirmed in its official blog that it will launch the cloud services Vcloud Hybrid service in the second quarter of this year, competing with Amazon Cloud service AWS for corporate cloud markets. As part of the plan, VMware integrates its existing Vcloud network and security product lines into this service.
In fact, VMware has been helping its customers build cloud services and providing cloud services for their IT shops, and VMware has a PAAs solution called Cloud Foundry that allows users to build and maintain applications in its database.
The launch of the public cloud service means VMware is the first to confirm that it will become an IaaS service provider. Unlike PAAs services, which primarily provide a simplification tool for developers, IaaS Cloud services will allow users to manage the infrastructure of the operating system and virtualization tools. In its statement, VMware said it would expand its current software-centric data center into a hybrid cloud service that would allow its 480,000 users to enjoy the benefits of cloud services without altering existing applications.
However, VMware does not give much detail, only that the business will be launched in the second quarter of 2013. It hired Savvis Cloud, the former president of Bill Fathers, to take charge of the project as one of the company's three major innovations. VMware says the business will get input that matches its importance. Perhaps to avoid getting people 211.html "> feels it is competing with its own customers, it only mentioned this decision at this morning's investor meeting and made a simple description on the blog to try to downplay the news. Last week, VMware sent a tweet about "VMware is warming up a public cloud service based on Vcloud." However, it quickly deleted the tweet.
VMware's service will compete directly with Amazon's AWS, IBM's SmartCloud Enterprise, HP Cloud and Rackspace. Interestingly, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger has led other executives to publicly scoff at Amazon. VMware's cloud services would not be defeated by "a bookseller," they say, while Amazon CTO Werner Vogels said, "Although people may only think of us as a bookstore, we are developing well." ”
As a successor, VMware would have to do better than Amazon to get users to migrate from Amazon's AWS service, which, after all, has already gained significant market share through ongoing promotions for Amazon, which has been pursuing "the first and second-largest". Also, VMware needs to attach more enterprise-class tools when releasing the IaaS solution. While Amazon's cloud services are not perfect, the many components it offers for large businesses have successfully nurtured the habits of corporate customers, and if VMware does not, Amazon and other cloud providers will continue to rely on their own rich functionality and ease of use to continue to lead.
VMware is trying to get a slice of the $14 billion worth of the market, and the resistance is not just from rivals. It is still a sensitive thing to join the public cloud battlefield because it has been giving the battlefield to its service provider partners, many of which are still its customers. This must be one of the reasons VMware wants to keep a low profile.
