It is known that there are countless people who visit the most popular websites. But what is the number of "countless"? How much traffic does the site have to be the world's top?

We are also curious about this question. At the top sites (like Facebook), we've all seen a lot of indecent visits, ranked top 50, Top 100, and the top 500 sites. A website to have more cattle--on the number of visits, how much access to the number of visitors-to be among the world's top 50, 100, 500 ranking?

Not long ago, Google published a list of top 1000 Web sites, including estimates of the monthly visits to the list. Based on this list, we did a little research.

Key findings

When you see so many site data in one breath, you will find obvious patterns. Before showing those patterns, we listed the following key findings:

• Rank among the top 1000 in the world and require at least 4.1 million visits per month.

• Rank among the top 500 in the world and require at least 7.1 million visits per month.

• Rank among the top 100 in the world and require at least 22 million visits per month.

• Rank among the top 50 in the world and require at least 41 million visits per month.

• Rank among the top 10 in the world and require at least 230 million visits per month.

• What? Want to be the world's most cattle site? Then you need more than 540 million visits per month. (Good luck to you ~)

Facebook is the site that has 540 million visits a month.

Also, in case of confusion, it is noted that the "access amount" referred to in this article refers to "independent access".

How much cattle is the best website?

To help you better understand how the top sites are distributed, we've drawn two charts for you. The first one shows the top 100 sites, and the latter shows the top 1000. The data in both charts is the monthly amount of Web site visits.

Here is the first chart:

(Chart 1: monthly independent visits to the top 100 sites in the world)

As you can see, a clear pattern emerges. In the "head" of the curve, as the horizontal axis moves to the right, the top-ranked web site traffic drops sharply; when the curve continues to the right, it becomes more and more flat. Obviously when you analyze the amount of traffic on your site, you get an example of the famous "Long Tail" theory.

When you extend your observation to the top 1000 sites in the world, the long tail is even more pronounced:

(Chart 2: The monthly independent visits of the top 1000 sites in the world; Note: The bar graph looks too messy, so the graph is represented.) )

"Long Tail" effect

The above two tables show an example of the "Long Tail theory" in terms of Web site traffic.

If you add total visits to each site and compare the total number of sites in the top 10, Top 100, and Top 1000, you'll find an unusually sharp percentage.

• The top 10 sites have total hits of 42% of the top 100 sites and 21% of the top 1000 total visits

• The top 100 of the total number of visits to the site accounted for the top 1000 of the total number of visits 50%, that is, the top 100 of the site's total number of visits equivalent to the ranking of 101~1000 site total traffic.

There must be some overlap between two different sites, which is the uniqueness of the data. After all, we netizens will not be willing to visit only one site. The higher the site rankings, the more the overlap in the number of visits.

Last Words

Now you know that you need at least 22 million visits per month if you want your site to be squeezed into the top 100 in the world. If the top 1000 is "enough", you need at least 4.1 million visits per month.

A little supplement to the data:

Data from Google, in order to get these estimates (note: This data is only estimated), Google used both its own data, but also the use of data from third parties.

Interestingly, Google often excludes the vast majority of its own websites from a list of similar websites. So, for example, Google search and YouTube, the above chart does not include the number of visits to these excellent sites. Since we know that Google search and YouTube are the top 10 sites, we have taken them into account in answering "the number of visits required to be ranked among the top 10 sites in the world". (That is, "one of the top 10 in the world, need at least 230 million visitors per month," The data, is the Google's list of the 8th-ranked site, the data. But because we can't get the amount of access these sites can compare to, they are not included in the chart.

This means that even if Google misses some of its own sites, this article is generally able to show how much traffic is needed to be among the world's most popular sites.
