Why are there more female entrepreneurs in New York than Silicon Valley?

Before Christmas 2014, I had coffee with my former MBA student, Anne, who had previously been responsible for the development of an important product in a search engine business. Now she has set up her own start-up and is looking for financing. I thought I would have a discussion with her on the development of the product, but she suddenly raised a question, let me feel helpless: "Why in this era, VCs still can not treat women entrepreneurs correctly?" I have many answers to this question. But no single answer can make two of us feel satisfied. It was not until I came back from New York that I finally found a better answer. The entrepreneurial Environment of Columbia University I flew to New York one week to teach the annual Lean Lacunchpad course, which is at Columbia Business School. There were 130 students in my class who were divided into 30 teams and went out of the classroom to interview 2,154 consumers within 5 days. In 120 hours, it's not easy to finish these interviews. The entrepreneurial atmosphere at Columbia University became very good last year. They set up the Columbia startup Lab, so that all students in the school can learn at the same time to understand entrepreneurship. New York start-ups Columbia startup Lab is located in the WeWork building, an enterprise that provides cooperative office space in 12 U.S. cities. After the lecture, I made a statistic. Of all 130 entrepreneurs, women accounted for 35%. In addition, I was surprised by the number of female entrepreneurs in more than 100 start-ups I saw in the WeWork building. It can be said that the number of female entrepreneurs in New York is much higher than the San Francisco Bay Area. I told my friend about the discovery that he was the head of NYU and Columbia University's Entrepreneurship program. He looked at me like an alien, and then he told me one answer: Most start-ups in New York are media, fashion, communications, real estate and financial companies, because these industries are all New York-centric. Historically, women have played an important role in these industries. More importantly, young women entrepreneurs can easily find examples and emulate them in these industries. And Silicon Valley start-ups are basically technology companies, and historically there are not many women who have made outstanding contributions to the industry. The answer reminds me of another interesting question: in the eyes of VC, is the success of female entrepreneurs related to the industry they are in? Or is it possible that New York's VCs are more than Silicon Valley's VCs?More forward-looking? New York VCs are from 21st century, and Silicon Valley VCs are still in 20th century?
