The world's leading optical network solutions provider Xtera Communications, Inc. ("Xtera") today announced the introduction of 100G technology specifically for long-distance submarine cable systems. Xtera was the first supplier to install 100G submarine Line terminal equipment (slte) on a relay submarine cable system: The project, which was designed to connect Egypt and Italy through a submarine cable system, was awarded GBI by Gulf Bridge Analysys (Xtera), and was put into service in the first quarter of 2012. GBI Cable System is the first and only commercial operation of the 100G relay submarine system. Since 2011, with its in-depth development of 100G technology including soft judgment forward error correction (FEC), Xtera has carried out a large number of 100G field tests on various cable systems in the past few quarters to improve the performance of 100G coverage in ultra long distances.
The 100G field test is carried out on a variety of different generations of submarine cable systems, which are made of various optical fibers with varying lengths of Xtera. Xtera's highly skilled and experienced testing team has tested regional, trans-Atlantic and Trans-Pacific cable systems. Accurate analysis of system performance is key, it helps to understand the 100G capacity of xtera, and further improves our 100G technology for upgrade projects and new projects.
Another variant of the 100G field test, including the Optical Transmission Survey (OTS), is designed to determine the maximum system capacity that the existing submarine cable system can support after an upgrade using Xtera 100G technology. Because of the wide variety of fiber types and generations of repeaters used in different system designs and configurations over the past 20 years, it is necessary to improve the simulation tools and make a reliable capacity commitment to upgrade projects through OTS.
Since 2001, Xtera has been working on the upgrading of submarine cable systems and has implemented its first commercial upgrade in the first quarter of 2006. Since then, Xtera has been working to accumulate unique experience and expertise in order to better understand the performance of cable systems as the channel rate becomes higher. Today, Xtera can provide advanced 100G technology for upgrading projects and new projects.
