Beijing Time June 29 news, according to foreign media reports, Yahoo and Silicon Valley venture capital company Benchmark Tuesday jointly announced that they will jointly set up a new company named Hortonworks, take over the widely used data analysis software Hadoop development work.
The newly established company will hire about 25 to 30 Yahoo engineers specializing in Hadoop, all of which began helping Yahoo develop Hadoop in 2005. Eric Baldeschwieler, vice president of Yahoo Engineering and head of the Yahoo Hadoop development team, will be expected to Eric Bardschwiller as Hortonworks's chief executive. In addition, the technicians from Yahoo will be given a minority stake in Hortonworks.
Yahoo said in a statement that the company will establish a "strategic partnership" with Hortonworks, and will hold a minority stake in Hortonworks, which will allow Yahoo to continue to use Hortonworks new technology. In addition, Benchmark Capital will also hold a partial stake in Hortonworks. Yahoo and Benchmark Capital said the new company would immediately start recruiting more Hadoop technicians and increase investment in the development of the Hadoop project after Hortonworks was established.
Yahoo has developed an Open-source software framework called "Hadoop", which is designed to handle massive amounts of data on the Internet. Yahoo said earlier this year that it would stop developing its own Hadoop platform and focus on the Apache Hadoop platform project to simplify Yahoo's IT infrastructure and unify the company's technology development standards.
Yahoo is currently using Hadoop to search for and filter spam messages in the email service yahoo Mail. Internet companies, including Facebook and ebay, use Hadoop software to analyze data. In addition, financial companies such as Visa also use Hadoop software.
Gigaom, the US Science and Technology blog, reported in Monday that the source said Yahoo would announce its Hadoop platform business on Tuesday or Wednesday and that the spin-off would focus on the development and commercialization of the Apache Hadoop platform project. Market analysts expect the market size of the Hadoop technology-based product to reach $ billions of trillion over the next few years.
