Yahoo plans to push Internet-specific unstructured cloud computing storage systems

Yahoo plans to launch a cloud-computing storage system, dubbed the--mobstor Storage System for the Internet.

Yahoo Senior Product Manager Navenite John Jahe (Navneet joneja) compares mobstor with existing cloud computing storage systems. He says Facebook's haystack system is primarily optimized for image storage, while Mobstor is optimized for the various storage needs of users.

It is reported that Mobstor based on rest (state of expression) architecture design, is accessible through the browser application interface, with a simple security model, storage content is not known function. The service's outstanding performance is able to carry out fast, reliable and secure storage, and to provide users with core services based on the implementation of multi-level services. It is reported that Mobstor is optimized for performance and applicability.

Facebook's haystack is based on bulk storage design. Mobstor also supports bulk storage, but it does not fully require this design. Instead, Mobstor has a storage-layer abstraction that we call ObjectStore. ObjectStore contains the core storage operations we need to do, which allows us to have many basic physical object stores. For example, this enables us to combine bulk storage with file storage. The storage top layer has routing intelligence and determines that ObjectStore is stored as a specified segment of data. Haystack determines that each object is through a 64-bit picture key, and that all objects on the mobstor are obtained through a logical URL rather than an object ID.

On Mobstor, the storage layer maps the logical URL and physical storage, and all execution can be done at the storage layer. Needless to say, this operation has potential performance bottlenecks, so we have carefully optimized the algorithms and hardware used.
