One, too much electricity

When system engineers design power supplies for the entire company's servers, they build a tunnel that adapts to the maximum flow, using the same way as the civil engineer designed the tunnel. Although most of the vehicles in the tunnels are just commuter, engineers still have to make sure the tunnels can accommodate large trucks or oil tankers.

The same is true for servers. Typically, you specify the power requirements based on the maximum system configuration and load. But system engineers don't need to be so symplectic. They can be equipped with different power requirements for different settings. Naturally, this will cost more money, so they tend to configure the maximum power supply in all wiring models regardless of the actual amount of electricity used.

For example, the server shown in figure two servers came from the same series Wastetech ' Sescalenteline. The left Wastetech ' SESCALENTE5000SUX is configured with enough hardware to require only 60W of power. The highest configuration on the right 6000SUX is installed with enough hardware to consume 540W of power. However, both servers use the same power supply. Although the current power supply enables the 6000SUX to obtain enough power, it provides too much power for servers that consume less electricity. This excess power has caused waste.

But the problem is not limited to the same series of servers. Many times vendors choose a power supply that fits all devices. Again, the problem is waste. While it is cheaper for manufacturers to choose the same power supply for all devices, you end up being responsible for inefficient power supplies. More seriously, the environment is also paying the price because of the increased carbon emissions that are generated by the use of inefficient electricity.

Thankfully, many companies like Dell offer different power configuration scenarios, and consumers can choose the right power supply based on how each server works. Especially when this configuration method runs through the entire service life of the server, it will greatly reduce the energy consumption.

Ii. efficiency

The efficiency of the power supply is usually calculated by dividing the output DC charge by the input AC charge. If a power supply can generate more DC power with less alternating current, the use of more alternating current will be more energy-efficient than using DC power. The formula is as follows

Efficiency = (Output direct current)/(input alternating current)

For example, if you have a power input 300W output 200W, it is simple to calculate, with 200 divided by 300.

The higher the efficiency, the better. In this case, 66% is not good. Generally speaking, a high quality power supply efficiency is 75%~85%. In the example, the remaining 34 did not just vanish, but turned it into heat, and then had to spend more to cool the heat.

When the power efficiency and system cooling are considered, the power consumed by the computer's effective operation may be less than 50% of the total power of the drive system. That means more than half of the energy consumed is a bottomless pit of http://www.aliyun.com/zixun/aggregation/5368.html "> Roi (RDI), which has no benefit to customers."

Different types and uses of the machine can use different kinds of power.

Iii. load

In terms of efficiency, the power supply is the least efficient when the server is idle. That is not to say that they use more electricity, but simply that they are less efficient at using electricity. It's like a motorbike, and when it stops there, it consumes the gas, but it doesn't move. But when you take a car to the driveway, you end up in a place where there is less energy wasted than when you leave your car idle. Now, consider a server configuration that is minimized, but uses a large power source. That power supply will produce a lot of useless electricity.

Manufacturers are trying to solve the problem. However, as has been seen before, this will require more upfront input, especially the use of expensive recyclable materials.

Iv. Redundancy

Data centers are often configured with redundant power supplies, and for obvious reasons, if a power supply is broken, there are other things that can keep the server running. In fact, in a large data center, power is on a different power grid, so if AC power goes wrong on one grid, other power supplies and servers will continue to work.

Redundant power configurations are good for ensuring that the device works, but not for energy efficiency. For example, if the server needs to run 200W, but only 1 800W of power, then this server can only use 25% of the power supply. If 1 redundant power supplies are added, energy use is split between these 2 power supplies and only 100W can be obtained from each power supply. At this time from 25% of the load, 83% efficiency, to 12.5% of the load, 65% efficiency.

The problems in the data centers are, in fact, a matter of balance. 8206.html "> System availability and reduce energy use and costs, which is more important?"
