Zheng, Chinese Academy of Sciences: Reducing energy consumption is the most serious challenge to the sustainable development of large data

Zheng, a academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said in Shenzhen 17th that the great data brought about by the information storm is changing human life, work and thinking, opened a major transformation of the times.

Zheng attended a new generation of information Technology Summit held during the 15th session of the Shenzhen High Fair, and delivered a speech on the topic of large data.

In 2011, he said, the amount of data copied and created by the world was 1.8ZB, far exceeding the total amount of all the printed material in the history of mankind, and if the 1.8ZB data were to be burned on a regular DVD, the disc would be superimposed at a height of about 720000 miles from the earth to the moon.

Zheng pointed out that these data are not data, but a strategic resource, the use of data resources to find knowledge, enhance efficiency, promote innovation, can make it for national governance, scientific research, technology development and enterprise decision-making and personal life services.

Zheng Lying also pointed out that with the wide use of large data in various fields, the demand for data centers increased at a uniform rate, data center power consumption has accounted for 8% of global energy and electricity consumption, is expected to double the increase in electricity consumption.

He believes that the huge demand for power in data centers has become a bottleneck constraining the development of large data technology, which means that reducing energy consumption is the most serious challenge for the sustainable development of large data technology.
