eclipse平台由許多子系統組成，子系統實現了一個或者多個外掛程式（plug-in）。子系統構建在一個small runtime engine上。如所示。

workbench

workbench指的是案頭開發環境（desktop development environment）。目標是實現無縫工具整合和可控制的開放性 by providing a common paradigm for the creation，management，and navigation of workspace resources.

每一個workbench window包含一個或者多個視圖perspective。視圖包含views，editors和control（以菜單和工具列的方式呈現）。可以存在多個workbench window。
