Win32 API中本身提供了Windows下許多常用的控制項，稱為Common Controls。 這些控制項與Button、ComboBox等控制項不同，不是在user32.dll中實現，而是在Comctrl32.dll中實現，相關的C++原型聲明在commctrl.h中。

所以，在使用Win32 API編寫Windows視窗應用程式時，如果在介面上用到了Common Controls，則必須在連結選項中包含comctrl32.lib庫，並在程式初始化時調用InitCommonControls()函數，確保控制項被載入。InitCommonControls()函數在commctrl.h中聲明，因此程式中需包含該標頭檔。
