I found this article in PMI magazine. It is an Indian IBM project manager with 18 years of management experience who has some experience working in multi-regional teams. I have recorded some of the points.
Multi-location teamAdvantages:
- Ability to select resources for the most appropriate projects (including people, environments, and infrastructure) Locally)
- Cost saving: There is no travel and related costs for numerous people to travel back and forth.
- Different regional economies can use resources more effectively to maximize the benefits.
Multi-location teamChallenges:
- Team maturity team Maturity
- A pm must consider the maturity of a team and the working experience of its members.
- A team should include junior and senior team members, project designers, and a project leader or team leader)
- The project leader is responsible for the assignment of jobs in the region and reporting the status of the region (updates & issues) to the upper-layer Manager (overall pm or engage manager)
- Skills and Ability
- A pm must consider whether the off-site team can work independently.
- Make full use of the unique skills or features of the off-site team.
- Communication and communication
- Typical communication channels include email, telephone, and video conferencing. However, as the number of team members increases, communication becomes increasingly complex.
- Therefore, a communication plan should be established for all participants in the project planning stage.
- Trust
- Respect and trust your team members, including their abilities, knowledge, experience, and value.
- Share practical or technical knowledge and experience with them.
- A pm must keep in mind its promise or guarantee.
- Relationship
- Create a "public zone"-a place for PM and team members to share their interests and knowledge with each other.
- Make sure that the communication is clear and that each member receives the correct information.
- Show concern for Members. Encourage/encourage employees by means of praise and other generous measures.
- Cultural differences cultural differences
- Pay attention to different cultures and work habits in different regions.
- Time zone difference geography/different time zone
- If the region is close, try to work together.
- For teams in different countries or long distances, effective communication should be conducted according to the established communication plan.
Summary
This article is more about an experience sharing. It also shares a simple working structure and method of working in a multi-regional team while giving guidance on the precautions required for working in multiple regions, and a general process. In my practical work experience, we have indeed met the challenges mentioned in it. The suggestions mentioned in it are good solutions. Of course, they are only for reference, it is not necessarily applicable to every situation.
