I. Install software using TFTP server
Update the software for the switch through the network. The IP address must be used to connect the server to the switch.
1. You must have a TFTP server (such as a PC running the TFTP server software) And a management workstation (such as a PC), and you can manage the switch through the console Port: Use a terminal simulation program (such as win95's HyperTerminal) and a RJ-45-to-RJ-45 connection cable and adapter: RJ-45-to-DB-9 female DTE adapter (labeled "Terminal ") RJ-45-to-DB-25 female DTE adapter (labeled "Terminal ") RJ-45-to-DB-25 male DCE adapter (labeled "Modem ") 2. Follow these steps to update the software through the TFTP server: 1) Save the Cisco Catalyst 1900/2820 software on the management workstation. 2) set the TFTP root directory to the Software Directory. 3) turn on the switch and the switch starts normally. 4) display the management menu in the terminal window (the management menu is shown below ). After the software is updated, the switch does not respond to the command within one minute, Then the switch restarts and uses the new software.

Ii. Install software using XMODEM protocol
You can use the management site to update the software for the switch through the XMODEM protocol.
The software installation process depends on the modem software you use.
1. You must have a management workstation (such as a PC) and can manage switches through the console Port:
Use a terminal simulation program (such as win95's HyperTerminal) and a RJ-45-to-RJ-45 connection cable and adapter:
RJ-45-to-DB-9 female DTE adapter (labeled "Terminal ")
RJ-45-to-DB-25 female DTE adapter (labeled "Terminal ")
RJ-45-to-DB-25 male DCE adapter (labeled "Modem ")
You can use HyperTerminal of win95 (supports XMODEM protocol ).
2. Follow these steps to update the software through the XMODEM protocol:
1) turn on the switch and the switch starts normally.
2) Start the terminal simulation program and display the management menu.
3) display the RS-232 Interface configuration menu from the console, input baud rate (2400,960 0, 19200,384 00, 57600), data bits = 8, stop bits = 1, parity = none
It takes about 10 minutes to install the software with a 57600 baud rate.
4) from the RS-232 Interface menu, select the [G] Option to activate the group settings for the console port.
5) The management site must match the console port settings.
6) Go to the Firmware configuration menu and select the [U] Option to install the software using the XMODEM protocol.
7) at the prompt, select Y to start the software installation process.
8) Check the update status in the system information area of the menu to verify the software update process.
After the software is updated, the switch does not respond to the command for about one minute, and then the switch restarts and uses the new software.

What is VTP?
VTP is short for VLAN Trunk Protocol. It provides each device (router or LAN-switch) to send broadcasts on the trunk ports. these broadcasts are sent to a multicast address and received by all adjacent devices. these broadcasts list the management domains of the sending devices, their configuration revision numbers, known VLANs, and identified parameters of known VLANs. by listening to these broadcasts, all devices in the same management domain can learn the new VLAN configured on the sending device. in this way, the new VLAN only needs to be created and configured on a device in the management domain. information is automatically learned by other devices in the same management domain.
Allocate VTP Domains
First, assign a VTP domain name (a VTP domain name). vswitches in the same management domain can learn VTP information from each other through the VTP protocol.
