In the above section, we have introduced the basic preparations for configuring the ADSL Modem. Now we will introduce the two basic methods for configuring the ADSL Modem.
Two ways to configure ADSL Modem
Generally, two different configuration methods are provided for the ADSL Modem of the Ethernet interface: one is to use the special configuration software and automatically connect to the modem through the configuration software, use some of its settings to set our modem. The other is to connect to the modem in a browser through the web method, and use the web configuration interface provided by the browser to set it in detail. Generally, the configuration options provided by modem configuration software are relatively simple, and only some basic settings can be completed to ensure that users can connect to the Internet normally, many advanced features cannot be set in the configuration software. On the other hand, the configuration software is simpler. You can use the ADSL Modem to access the Internet by following the instructions in the Wizard. The entire process is silly. You only need to enter a few values and select several options. This is very suitable for beginners.
However, it should be noted that, under normal circumstances, each manufacturer can only use its own configuration software to configure the ADSL Modem, such as some models of Asus, however, in the modem sold on the market, it seems that as long as the same processing chip product is used, most configuration software can be used for mutual use. Therefore, you only need to select a processing chip that is the same as the one used by your modem, so you can easily configure the software for use.
The web configuration method is much more complicated. In this way, we can configure all the functions of the entire modem in detail. In many modem models, its advanced features can only be configured on the web. In this article, we will focus on the configuration of ADSL modem in web mode.
In addition, there is also an ADSL Modem configuration method, that is, using the telnet command to remotely log on to the modem. Some old products still use this configuration method. After you log on to the modem using the telnet command or the Super Terminal, a character interface menu appears for you to choose, press the corresponding letter or number to complete the modem settings step by step. However, there are two inconveniences in this method. One is that the man-machine interaction between menus on the Character interface is not very friendly. Sometimes the returned menus must be returned multiple times, in addition, some of the configuration options are not very intuitive and are all in English. You need to be familiar with the hardware parameters. Second, in some modem models, the character interface menu is not provided. You must use some Unix-like commands to configure the modem, it requires users to be familiar with Linux/Unix operating systems, or use online help at user prompts, which is a headache for friends who are not good at English.
In general, we do not advocate using this method, but you can use telnet when some of the hidden functions of modem are not enabled, enter a command to enable those functions that are not enabled by default. For example, if ZTE 831 has an old product model and its routing function is not enabled by default, we can use telnet to enable its routing function in the command status. This will be introduced in the following content.
1. Use Configuration Software
USB interface and card-type modem are usually set with configuration software. In most cases, the modem of these two interfaces only provide basic Internet functions, there is no routing function, for example, basically available for every ADSL Modem (in fact, this is not realistic ). The Ethernet interface modem also provides many configuration software for fast configuration. This is a simple configuration method. We can use it to quickly set up some basic modem functions to ensure normal connection. This is especially suitable for new users, the following describes in detail how to use the configuration software to set up our modem.
For the modem using the Globespan titanium series chips, in fact, they can all be configured using the configuration software of a certain manufacturer, because the functions provided by the same series of chips are almost the same, therefore, the configuration software can be used in general. The author uses the TP-Link company TD-8800 configuration software, I used to drive a modem configuration software on the disc, but its connection speed is very slow, it takes about five or six minutes to connect to the modem, and a connection error is often prompted. The use of TP-Link company TD-8800 configuration software, the connection speed is very fast, and very stable, and all for the Chinese interface. Download the software at http://www.tp-link.com.cn/chinese/soft/20031010155518.zip. If you are using the modem of this chip, try again.

After the software is executed, the interface shown in 2 appears. Enter the LAN address of your modem in the "ip address" column. This address is generally a reserved IP address of class C. By default, the IP address 192.168.1.1 is multiple, however, there are also many other reserved modem addresses. You can find this address from the modem instruction manual and then fill it in.

Figure 2: ADSL Modem Configuration Software

Then, fill in the "user name" and "password" Columns with the user name and password of your modem respectively. The factory default values of this user name and password can also be found in the Manual, generally, the default user names and passwords of modem of the same model are the same. If you have modified the user name and password you have logged on to, but do not remember, you only need to reset the modem to restore the initial user name and password. In general, the user names and passwords of modem of many manufacturers are basically the same. If you cannot connect to the instruction manual, we can try some parameters that everyone knows, it is very likely that you can access it.

After you press the "Log on" button, the configuration software will attempt to log on to the modem, verify the user name and password, and obtain the status parameters of the current modem. The software will display a successful login screen, see figure 3.

Go to the configuration software's main interface immediately. There are four buttons in the left column: "quick Settings", "DHCP Settings", "modulation method", and "Current status ". The right side of the main window shows the current status parameters of modem, such as the Protocol used, VPI/VCI value, encapsulation form, current rate, and so on. See Figure 4. For the new modem used for the first time or the device whose parameters are to be reset, click the "quick Settings" button and follow the instructions in the Wizard to complete the modem settings step by step.

Next, let's select the protocol used by modem. In the "Wan protocol" section, there are about five kinds of Wan protocols used by modem for users to choose. In general, there are two basic ways for users of telecom operators such as China Telecom, China Netcom, and China tietong to use ADSL Modem, there are many other scenarios, such as routing with fixed IP addresses and dialing with dynamic IP addresses. If you need to dial the Internet (that is, you need to use a virtual dialing software to connect to the ISP's server before going online), select the first item "EoA (RFC 1483 Bridged) "bridge mode, and if it is a route using a fixed IP address (that is, the user's computer can obtain a valid fixed public IP address from the ISP ), select the second item "EoA (RFC 1483 Routed )".

For dial-up Internet access, sometimes we can see that some users do not need to use virtual dial-up software to dial the Internet when starting the Internet, but can access the Internet when starting the internet like a residential broadband, there are probably two different methods to achieve this. One is to put the virtual dialing software shortcut into the system startup group, and the system will automatically dial as soon as it enters the desktop, this enables you to access the Internet after you start the system. Because the modem sold on the market now has the routing function and the automatic dialing function. Therefore, another method is to configure the ADSL Modem as a routing mode, and then the entire modem becomes a small SOHO router. After the connection to the ISP terminal is completed by power-on, it can automatically dial and automatically connect to the server of the ISP. In this case, I have encountered that generally, the ISP uses the PPPoE method, and we need to select the last "PPPoE (RFC 2516 )".

Here, I want to explain to you that, if we are using a single ADSL line for several families (this is a common situation, I will share it with many colleagues and friends in ADSL, the fees are shared, and the speed is basically not affected. You should configure the modem as PPPoE. When sharing Internet access, you should not want to use a machine to drive as a proxy server all the year round. It is also a lot of trouble to dial a number every time you go online. In addition, only the modem is enabled, and the devices are transparent to several users at the same time. They can access the Internet by opening a browser when starting the system.

The next step is to set basic telecom parameters for the protocols used. No matter which protocol is used, we need to select the value of VPI/VCI and the encapsulation type of the Protocol. As shown in figure 5. For each protocol type, the two basic telecom parameters must be filled in, but other parameters are different.

Figure 5: telecom parameter settings

In the "atm vc Settings" column, enter the relevant parameters of the local telecom. Here, the value of VPI/VCI is 0/35, respectively, then, in the "encapsulation type" column, select the protocol encapsulation type, which generally does not need to be changed. Select the default setting value, if you do not know the specific settings used by the local telecom, you can call the Technical Support Hotline to ask.

One thing to note here is that if the user's ADSL can be assigned a valid fixed IP address, the computer in the LAN can share the Internet with this fixed IP address, if the IP address is a fixed IP address + multi-host shared Internet access, you need to check the "WAN parameter" option, and then fill in the IP address allocated by the ISP, the corresponding subnet mask, and the default gateway, then, set the IP address of the computer in the LAN to the IP address of the LAN port of the modem in the same CIDR block. If you do not have a fixed IP address, do not select this option. If you do not select the WAN parameter, that is, the ADSL Modem is set as a transparent bridge, which is suitable for accessing the Internet from a single machine. In this bridge mode, we need to use a third-party dialing software to dial up. The computer can get a dynamic IP address and then access the internet.

After entering the relevant Telecom parameters, click "Submit" to write the setting value to the ADSL Modem. After the modem restarts, the Internet can be accessed as long as the dial-up is successful on the computer, and everything is that simple.

In EoA (RFC 1483 Routed) mode, after entering the telecom parameters, enter the relevant information of the IP address allocated by the ISP in the "WAN parameter" option next, click Submit.

For the PPPoE protocol for automatic dialing, the setting is quite simple. after entering the relevant Telecom parameters, click "Next, fill in the "PPP Parameters" column with the user name and password assigned to the user by the ISP, and then select the password protocol. Here, we generally do not change the password, select the default value "PAP" and click "Submit. See Figure 6.

Figure 6: PPPoE settings complete

The configuration software is used to set the ADSL Modem. We generally use its quick setting function, which is simple and quick. The basic parameters of the modem can be fixed in a few steps to make it accessible to the Internet. Other options, such as the modulation method, do not need to be changed. Just use its default settings. In this interface, there is also a much used option, namely "DHCP Settings", which sets our ADSL Modem as a DHCP server on the network, in this way, in a small LAN, we can use the DHCP service function provided by modem to dynamically allocate IP addresses to clients on the network when the number of users is small, this eliminates the trouble of setting an IP address for a single instance. on the client's computer, you only need to set it to automatically obtain the IP address. The setting of this function is quite simple. You only need to enter the starting address and ending address of the IP address you want to assign to the client. In addition, if you have set a route to share the Internet, enter the DNS server address. The configuration options of this DHCP server are too simple in the configuration software. We will introduce some control options in this regard in detail in the following content about setting modem in web mode, in the web mode, more advanced DHCP options are provided for users.

2. Web configuration

As mentioned above, apart from using the configuration software to set up the modem, in most cases, ADSL Modem provides a web configuration interface (at least the modem sold in the last two or three years that I have seen can provide this configuration method ), we can use a browser to configure the modem. In the web mode, the vendor provides more configuration options, and many advanced functions can be set in them, after figuring out the specific meaning of the options of the ADSL Modem in the web mode, we can easily control our modem. We no longer need to ask for help or ask experts to settle the issue.

Enter the IP address 192.168.1.1 of the modem in the address bar of the browser, and enter the correct user name and password to go to the homepage of the ADSL Modem settings (Figure 7-1 ). On this page, there are seven tabs, respectively "Homepage", descriptions of some modem status information and system time settings, and system mode and quick installation. "LAN port" is used to set LAN parameters of the modem, such as the IP address of the LAN used and DHCP functions; "Wide Area Network port", the content in this option is mainly to configure modem-related Telecom parameters, as well as the user name and password information during dial-up; "bridging ", this option is used to configure the relevant Telecom parameters when modem is set to a transparent bridge; "routing", the content of this option may be the most concern of many users who share the Internet, in fact, when only one machine is used, the modem can also configure the High-route mode. The detailed information about the route and related PPP automatic dialing can also be configured. "service ", this option is a security function provided by modem, such as firewall, IP address filtering settings, and DNS, RIP, and so on. "management", under this option, users who manage modem, remote/local upgrade, alarm, diagnosis, and modem You can set the ports in detail here.

In addition to the horizontal layout of Multiple labels shown in Figure 7-1, the common web configuration interface of ADSL Modem has several other layout types, as shown in figure 7-2 and Figure 7-3. The left side of the two la s is an expanded menu. The detailed functions of each item are shown in the + section, and the detailed settings are displayed on the right side. In fact, the layout is arranged differently, and the functions of modem with different processing chips are slightly different. However, the functions of each function option are similar from the name to the actual function, and the main functions are the same. In addition, based on my experience, the functions provided by the modem on the two interfaces below are actually relatively simple. Therefore, we only need to figure out the various configurations of the Globespan titanium series chip modem, in addition, the model settings are clear at a glance.

For the content of each specific option, I will give you a detailed explanation in the following content, and some useful and practical functions, based on the author's own experience, I have provided some examples for use. I hope that you can better leverage your ADSL Modem potential.

In the next article, we will detail the configuration option groups on the WEB interface.(
