The port Mapping method enables access to specific port services from the Internet to the local area network internal machines. The author sums up several port mapping methods used in teaching and networking practice, and discusses them in this field.
Using IIS to realize the redirection of WWW and FTP services
Windows 2000 and Windows XP all contain the IIS components, where the WWW and FTP services have home directory redirection settings that are different in name but similar in comparison to port mappings. This article is illustrated with the WWW and FTP services for IIS 5.0 under Windows 2000.
1, the WWW service redirection
Open the Internet Services Manager in Administrative Tools, go to the Internet Information Services dialog box, select a Web site name, such as "Default Web Site", view its properties, and under the Home Directory tab of the property page, we can set the home directory location of the WWW server.
To set the home directory to "shared on another computer," You can use the "{server} {share name}" format in the Network directory column to fill in the home directory that is already shared on the WWW server within the LAN, for example: Server6www.
We can also select "Redirect to URL" and then in the "Redirect to" section, enter a link to the WWW server inside the LAN, such as http://192.168.0.6.
2, the FTP service redirection
Similar to the WWW service redirection, open the Internet Services Manager in Administrative Tools, go to the Internet Information Services dialog box, select the FTP site name, for example, "Default FTP Site", view its properties, and under the Home Directory tab of the property page, We can set the FTP server's home directory location.
WinRoute Pro's port mapping feature
WinRoute Pro is an internet-sharing software that works in NAT (Network address translation) mode. It itself has a port mapping feature.
Run WinRoute administration and log in, select "Settings→advanced→port Mapping" on the main menu, and the settings interface of the port map appears. The Add and edit interface for the port map entry is shown in the figure.
The options you can set include protocol, listening port, port type (single end port or a range of contiguous ports), destination host, destination port, and so on.
