GNOME Desktop designer William szilveszter, recently released gnome (and xfce) Desktop graphics extension kit (: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php? Content = 26757 & vote = Good & tan = 72954579), including GTK, Firefox, Thunderbird, extended icon set, and player skin. In addition, there is a desktop wallpaper. His design work was released in Gnome-Look.org in 22nd day of this month, less than a week to get the highest rating of netizens, so far the download times have exceeded 8000 times. Recently, he talked about GNOME desktop design in an interview.

1) Could you introduce yourself first?

My name is William szilveszter, who thinks Linux and all software are more beautiful.

2) are your favorite operating systems Linux, Mac, or windows?

I use a PC. Although I like Apple's iPod and do not want to annoy Mac users, I have never been a fan of Mac OS X. I recently used Linux. I'm tired of windows. I just tried Linux from my friend, And then I switched to Linux in a month.

3) Ah! You are a Linux User. Which release do you like to use? Do you have any favorite or annoying releases? What about the window manager and the desktop environment? Why choose them?

Wow ~~ So many problems. Let me answer one by one. The released version I selected is Gentoo. I have been using it for a year and can't do without it. My desktop environment is gnome. I never like blackbox, fluxbox, and xfce4 desktop environments. I chose gnome because it is lightweight, fast, and beautiful in appearance. I think its development direction is very correct. I am also keen on modifying gnome to make it more beautiful.

Sometimes I want to program and implement some of my ideas, but my passion has always been devoted to graphic design. I used a fully functional desktop environment because it is in the 21st century, the computer processor has a 3 GHz memory capacity of up to 2 GB, LCD display, 10 thousand RPM hard drive, and MB graphics card, the performance of today's desktops is as strong as that of previous supercomputers.

4) What contribution have you made to the open-source software community? Have you participated in any projects?

I emailed the project manager to submit my graphic design. So far, only Jakub Steiner has added my gperfection2 icon set to Gnome default settings. However, I am not lucky for other projects. I have been away.

5) So far, which contribution is your most satisfactory? Why?

I think it is the gperfection2 icon set. The reason is simple. It unifies the overall desktop style. One of my biggest concerns is that windows, Linux, and other operating systems have different styles. I hope that every program and icon in my computer will have a perfect picture quality and a uniform style. With this icon set, it is much closer to achieving my wish.

6) these jobs are your contribution to the community for free. Are you not paid?

No compensation. All jobs are free of charge, for the benefit of everyone and for myself. I love graphic design, but I haven't had much time. Although I miss Photoshop very much, It is satisfying to design some works and share them with everyone.

7) When did you start to participate in and help the gnome project?

I have said that I have been away before. I joined the gnome project half a year ago. I saw that the gnome project was useful to me and I joined the gnome project without thinking too much. Interestingly, this step is purely accidental.

8) Why did you join the gnome project? Why is it the gnome project, not its competitor KDE?

I did some design for KDE and then left. At that time, I lost all my creative control capabilities, and my idea eventually turned into an unexpected result. This made me very disappointed with the KDE Desktop, and I just took my own schedule. Later, I joined the gnome project and never left gnome again since then. The competition between GNOME and KDE is fierce, and I do not like the development direction of Kde, so I took root in the gnome camp.

9) I heard that you recently released a graphic suite, this includes a GTK topic, an icon set, a Firefox browser skin, a beep Media Player skin, and an xmms player skin. Can you introduce more information? Are you satisfied with this suite? How is it currently?

There is also a Thunderbird topic. This graphic kit reflects my design philosophy for a unified desktop style. Color themes and other program themes create a strong cultural atmosphere. Many people praise me because it combines many aspects of desktop. We all hope that the desktop style can be unified, and the desktop is clean and professional. I strive for perfection. Are I satisfied with this design? Maybe I haven't fully realized my potential yet, but I am very proud of it. I wanted to add more designs, but many programs won't be used, which has become a obstacle for me in some aspects (test and practical Theme Building. The future of this suite is hard to say now. I believe I will find a new way to expand it. Here I would like to thank remenic for helping me with the clearlooks engine, and schamane has made a lot of effort for me in metacity theme office.

10) just now I checked the Gnome-Look.org and found that 93% of users rated this graphic suite as excellent, the number of downloads has been more than 8000 times, have you ever thought that user ratings would be so high?

I never expected the user rating to be so high. I know the gperfection2 icon set has a high score, but I won't forget it. I am not very interested in the grading system of art design, and the whole community is very supportive of me, which is more grateful than the rating.

11) Do you have any other hobbies?

Too many. I will never do only one thing. I love weightlifting, skating, and Psychology (preparing for my PhD ). I also like computers, from hardware to software. But I know that I am actually a designer. This fact always brings me back to reality. I have the eyes of a designer. This is my advantage in developing desktops (although I am getting longer and longer ).

12) Where do you live now?

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

13) Do you have other jobs?

No. I am still a liberal arts student.

14) Do you have a girlfriend? What about pets?

I am single and have no pets.

15) What books have you read recently? Have you read the latest Harry Potter?

Textbooks are always textbooks. I am not a fan of Harry Potter, but some of my friends like it. No matter whether I like it or not, they will tell me the story in Harry Potter :)

16) Will your local friends help you solve the computer problem?

Yes. But I will not be brave enough to say that I am very proficient in computers. I always think that it is better to teach people to fish than to teach them to fish ". I am no longer a friend of mine for technical support, which makes me very disgusted.

17) who has the greatest impact on your life-truly inspire you to do something?

I am a freshman professor of psychology. He introduced me into my current field of psychology.

18) What is your favorite email client and browser?

Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox.

19) What are your commonly used graphics applications?

Adobe Photoshop. I know that people in the GNU community saw that I didn't say gimp (a GNU-compliant Image Processing Program) and would kill me :)

20) What about the music player?

Beep media player.

21) What is a killer application?

Do you mean gnome-related programs? I will select the Nautilus resource manager. Although it is flawed, it is the most commonly used program recently. I am a minimum requirement and do not like flashy things. As long as I can use it, I can complete my work, and it looks pleasing to the eye.

22) Who are you willing to stay on the island if there is a sea problem?

Anyone except my ex-girlfriends can :)

23) What do you think of ubuntu release?

I like it. If I don't need Gentoo, I will choose ubuntu. It is stable and the version is new.

24) How can we contact you?

Email is the best way to contact me.

25) Do you have a website?

26) Last question. When you are a child, do you think of the current situation? Would you like to try again? Are there any regrets?

I have always wanted to be a comic book writer, but I had to give up after thinking that it was hard to make a living. But I don't have much regret. I love my major and I am very happy with my decision.
