Is mysqli a procedural database, and pdo an object-oriented database?

Is mysqli a procedural database? is pdo an object-oriented database? are the two concepts a little confused? I don't know if so, or can both be mixed, in addition, PDO is object-oriented. why do many large projects use it instead of mysqli?

Mysqli provides process-oriented and object-oriented solutions.
The appearance of pdo is several years later than that of mysqli and does not reach the expected performance until php5.3.
Before that, do you have to ask someone to use mysql?

Why is mysqli used? because PDO only supports PHP5 and later versions, and the efficiency is low in high concurrency, and the old implementation method is still in the buffer period. if you still use mysqli, you can consider changing the implementation method.
