Performance Comparison and Evaluation of the latest five mainstream browsers

ZDNet, a well-known foreign technology blog, recently tested the latest versions of five mainstream browsers, including Chrome 18, Opera 11, Firefox 11, IE9, and Safari 5.

Test content

• SunSpider JavaScript 0.9.1-a JavaScript benchmark component developed by Mozilla;
• V8 Benchmark Suite-a JavaScript benchmarking component developed by Google to test the V8 JavaScript Engine;
• Peacekeeper-FutureMark's JavaScript testing component, focuses on testing animation, navigation, tables and other elements;
• Kraken 1.0-another JavaScript testing component developed by Mozilla. It is based on the SunSpider JavaScript component, but focuses on other elements.

Test Platform

64-bit Windows 7 system, Q9300 260 GHz quad-core processor, 4 GB memory, nvidia gtx graphics card.

Test Results

1. SunSpider Benchmark (lower points, better performance)

Winner: 32-bit IE 9 loser: Safari 5 Chrome 17 is comparable to Chrome 18's test results.

2. V8 Benchmark (the higher the credit, the better)

Winner: Chrome 18 Loser: 32-bit IE 9 Chrome 18 test results are better than Chrome 17.

3. Peacekeeper (the higher the credit, the better)

Winner: Chrome 17 defeated: 32-bit IE 9, Chrome 17 takes a slight advantage over Chrome 18, but points are very close

4. Kraken (lower points, better performance)

Winner: Chrome 18 defeated: 32-bit IE 9, Chrome 18 leading Chrome 17

Conclusion

Overall, Chrome 18's performance is similar to Chrome 17, and the JavaScript engine of the new browser is not significantly improved. The biggest improvement of Chrome 18 is hardware acceleration, which also enables legacy systems to support WebGL 3D.
