Port Number and socket pair

At any time, multiple processes may use either of the TCP, UDP, and sctp transport layer protocols. All three Protocols use a 16-digit port number to differentiate these processes.

When a customer wants to contact a server, it must identify the server to communicate. TCP, UDP, and sctp define a group of well-known port numbers to identify well-known services.

On the other hand, customers usually use temporary ports that survive for a short period of time. These port numbers are generally automatically assigned to the customer by the transport layer protocol. The customer generally does not care about the specific value of the temporary port, but only needs to be sure that the port is unique in the host. The transfer protocol Code ensures this uniqueness.
