Study Notes: SQLSERVER2014 Memory Database

Sqlserver2014 supports the memory database function. Memory is the lifeline of database performance. In theory, if the memory is sufficient, SQLSERVER can load all the data into the memory, access, modify, or anything in the memory, and write the data back to the hard disk only at the checkpoint. Databases are forced to use LazyWri only when the memory is insufficient.

Memory is the lifeline of database performance. Theoretically, if the memory is sufficient, SQL SERVER can load all the data into the memory, access, modify, or anything in the memory, and write the data back to the hard disk only at the checkpoint. Only when the memory is insufficient will the database be forced to Write Lazy pages frequently.

So what is the difference between a memory database and a previous one that loads data into the memory?

My understanding is as follows:

1) The memory database stores the specified table in the memory instead of the entire database. This is a mandatory action. It is not for the sake of performance that databases load when there is ample memory, but replace when there is not enough memory.

2) memory databases use file streams to organize data files on disks, rather than partitions and pages.

In a memory database, data files stored on disks are stored based on file stream instead of partition or page storage. One of the features of file stream storage is the support for Fast Read operations, which can greatly improve the efficiency when the database is restarted and the data in the file stream is loaded into the memory.

3) The change and deletion of the memory database adopts the method of adding records.

Update: instead of modifying the corresponding records in the memory, a new record is added. During the query, the system merges these records and returns them;

If the record is deleted, it is added and recorded in another file: delta file.

The data files in the memory database are divided into data file and delta file, which appear in pairs.

The memory database may be the most anticipated function of SQL SERVER2014. It is said that the database has three major development trends:

1) Memory Database

2) cloud computing

3) All-in-One Machine
