Reports from large Internet content providers, including Yahoo, Facebook, and Google, show that "IPv6Brokenness (connectivity damage) "(that is, end users with misconfigured systems cannot access networks that support the next generation communication protocol IPv6. Concerns about IPv6Brokenness have always been a major obstacle for content providers who want to deploy IPv6. As an emerging standard, IPv6 is committed to solving the problem of IPv4 address shortage in existing networks.
At this week's Internet Engineering Task Group (IETF) meeting, some popular websites shared the latest measurement details about IPv6Brokenness.
Experts said that for the following two reasons, 6brokenness is gradually decreasing:
1. the browser provides the "quick return" function (such as Google Chrome), which can automatically set the user configuration that has undergone IPv6Brokenness to IPv4.
2. Websites (such as Yahoo, Facebook, and Google) that are busy with large-scale promotion of solutions are providing automatic detection and repair tools for users who are worried about suffering 6brokenness. In the "World IPv6 Day" held on April 9, June 8 this year, a 24-hour IPv6 experiment was conducted. The promotion scheme was also carried out.
Russ Housley, IETF chairman, said: "As the browser provides fast repair functions and the world IPv6 Day, which is vigorously promoted, we have almost fixed the issue of IPv6Brokenness ."
Christopher Palmer, an engineer from the Microsoft Windows Network Team, agreed: "In general, IPv6Brokenness is gradually being resolved as the host and browser are being deployed and repaired. In the IPv6 world, Microsoft received five phone numbers about IPv6Brokenness, but it was found that only one of them was true ."
Due to misconfiguration or improper use of network devices, users with IPv6Brokenness experience slow network speeds and other problems when connecting to IPv6-supported websites. This problem mainly occurs on the home Internet. Enterprise Users may encounter these problems due to incorrect firewall settings. For end users experiencing IPv6Brokenness, supporting both IPv6 and IPv4 website configurations (tunnel or dual-stack mode) seems to have experienced supply interruptions.
Before World IPv6 Day, the Internet Society (ISOC) predicted that 0.05% of network users would suffer 6brokenness in a 24-hour experiment. This number may sound insignificant, but the actual number of affected users is 1 million.
In particular, Yahoo publicly expressed concern about IPv6Brokenness, but this worry is redundant. Igor Gashinsky, Yahoo's chief architecture engineer, said: "In the past 21 months, the company has measured 6brokenness from 0.078% to 0.022%. We kept at the 0.022% level during the IPv6 World Day ."
The same is true for other network content providers, including Facebook and Google.
Li Dong from Facebook's network engineer team said: "Since the IPv6 World Day, Facebook's IPv6Brokenness has dropped from 0.03% to 0.02%. However, if we switch Facebook to IPv6 permanently, about 0.02% of users log on to our website slowly-this is the significant impact of the dual-stack mode on us.
"Before World IPv6, we sent a message to users that Facebook may suffer 6brokenness. It seems that many users have already solved it themselves. After World IPv6, the situation of IPv6Brokenness has been reduced. I was surprised that I thought it would not change before, and users would only bear it silently. But the result is that our measuring instruments have not changed, but the dual-stack mode is gradually decreasing ." Li Dong continued.
Google's network engineer lorzo Colitti said: "The most important thing Goole does for world IPv6 is to warn users in advance that they may suffer IPv6Brokenness and encourage them to diagnose their own systems. We have set a drop-down box at the top of the search homepage, informing us that we will test IPv6 in March June 8. Users should click here to see if they are ready. We have prepared an IPv6 test site for the user.
Google also added the "return service" to convert IPv6 back to IPv4 in its Chrome browser ".
Colitti went on to say: "IPv6 connectivity damage has dropped by 80% to 90% in Chrome. If all browsers have similar performance, we can publish our IPv6 "4-A record ". The 99.9995% browser version with the quick return feature is as reliable as IPv4. We can also see similar performance in Firefox 7. Apple also added this feature to its OS X Lion. Now we are waiting for Microsoft IE to take this action ."
Palmer did not comment on when Microsoft will provide a patch for IE to handle "Fast Return", but hinted that Microsoft plans to handle IPv6 connectivity damages in the next-generation operating system.
In the past 40 years, IPv6 is the largest network infrastructure upgrade. Because IPv6 is not compatible with IPv4, website operators must upgrade their network devices and software to support IPv6 traffic.
Because the network is consuming all IPv4 addresses, IETF created the IPv6 Standard 10 years ago. On April 9, February this year, all unallocated free IPv4 addresses were exhausted. In September April, all IPv4 addresses were used up in the Asia Pacific region, except for new enterprises. The US internet number Registry (ARIN), responsible for IP address distribution by network operators in North America, said all its IPv6 addresses will be distributed this fall.
IPv4 uses a 32-bit address and supports 4.3 billion direct connection to the network. IPv6 uses 128-bit support and can connect to almost unlimited devices (128 to the power of 2 ). Compared with network translation (NAT) devices, IPv6 can provide faster and lower-cost network services.
