Thoughts on system stability and availability in subway events

One thing that happened on the Beijing subway at the peak of last night made me feel uncomfortable. A young man was killed in a clip between two automatic doors of the subway. Whatever the mood of the victim's family, as an ordinary person, they will feel very sorry and resentful. Why does the subway door take one life after another more than once? Do not think that this is a "low probability event" and the default event is reasonable. If we respect human life, even if we have a low probability, we will have to pay a very high price. This kind of thing should not happen.

There have been many incidents in which people take their lives in the subway. This incident happened in Beijing as early as 2007 in Shanghai, and it was also clamped between screens and trains. In the event of such incidents in Shanghai, Beijing Line 5 promised that the automatic door would not intercept people, and made a lot of improvements, considering the situation that people are clipped between the automatic door and the train. I don't know whether complicated tests are taken into account when I say this sentence; I don't know whether the system availability is guaranteed theoretically when I say this sentence; I don't know whether the value of life has been taken into account with a responsible attitude when I say this. I only know that this so-called optimization reduces the distance between the screen door and the train, and it is rumored that it cannot accommodate one person at all. But are there any small and small people? I only know that the improved automatic door is still broken; I only know that a young person's life is so cruel and deprived.

We need to think about this kind of thing multiple times. What causes the problem today? There is a high traffic volume on the subway, and a small probability will also lead to frequent incidents. So how can we ensure that such a thing will not happen again. I personally think that the stability and availability of the system should be put in place. At present, the screen door design of the subway is clearly a security hazard, and the system with security hazards is an unavailable system, coupled with management omissions in the case of high traffic, A pity will inevitably happen.

The same is true for subway security doors and for storage systems. If a storage system suffers from vulnerabilities, instability, or unavailability, it will lead to service stagnation and cause serious economic losses. Serious circumstances can lead to bankruptcy of the company. When designing such a system, if we do not have a mentality of reverence for technology, respect for our customers, or be responsible for our society, what we do will only harm our society. I remember when I graduated from college, my classmates left. My friends in the dormitory joked and said, "the missile control program I wrote won't blow up my headquarters ". Although it is a joke, I keep it in mind that what we do cannot harm society! As an engineer, we should look at technology, systems, and customers with an awesome attitude. We should be responsible for introducing available systems to the society. A truly available system can be called an excellent product.

Subway events make us very uncomfortable. May the dead rest in peace! What we can do is to launch stable and available products.
