In today's enterprise organizations, data is managed in a complex ecosystem consisting of heterogeneous data sources and data assets. A major challenge for administrators (DBAs) is to ensure that they can securely and efficiently share necessary connection information with authorized applications and users.
IBM Data Studio (including the complete Data Studio client, Data Studio management client, and Data Studio Web Console) is a combination of tools to simplify database development and management. For an overview of the Data Studio client and Web Console, see getting started with IBM Data Studio.
This article describes how IBM Data Studio provides a new solution that allows you to improve database connection sharing between Data Studio user groups. From IBM Data Studio V3.1, you can use the Data Studio Web Console to store your connection information in a repository to share this information among team members. Database connections can be shared among all components and users in the Web console.
Prerequisites
Data Studio Web Console
Data Studio Web console can be used to create and manage any available Linux®, UNIX®Windows®Or z/OS®The lifecycle of the database connection. Before setting up database connection sharing on Data Studio, you must install and configure the Data Studio Web console.
If you are planning to provide available Web console for multiple users, you will also need to use an existing database as a repository database. You must add the connection you want to share after defining the repository database. The connection created before the definition of the repository database is lost.
Data Studio Eclipse-Based Client
The IBM Data Studio product line includes two Eclipse-based clients:
Full IBM Data Studio Eclipse Client
Starting from the full IBM Data Studio client V3.1, DB2®Optim for Linux, UNIX, and Windows™Development Studio and Optim Database Administrator have been integrated into IBM Data Studio.
- Full IBM Data Studio Client
- IBM Data Studio management client
The full client of IBM Data Studio provides complete editing functions and is suitable for other compatible IBM products (such as IBM Rational®Developer or user of Architect or IBM Rational Application Developer.
On the other hand, the management client of IBM Data Studio provides non-Java™A lightweight environment preferred by developers, which focuses on data management. Both the full client and the management client provide two resource managers to manage the lifecycle of their connections.
- The new Administration Explorer is often associated with a separate display view, also known as an object List View. This view represents the underlying data objects of each connected connection and their respective attributes.
- Data Source Explorer displays the complete hierarchy of each connected connection.
Both resource managers provide different presentation layers. We will talk about Administration Explorer further, but remember that these two resource managers can be used in exchange.
Manage connections in an Enterprise
In today's cross-development, production, testing, and internal migration enterprise systems, DBAs need to manage increasing complex data connections. To complete the necessary updates (updated port numbers, temporary migration, and addition) of the daily management drivers, you need to implement persistent communication between the DBA and its users.
To reduce staff communication and Data management costs, the new IBM Data Studio feature allows DBAs to centrally manage and share Data connection information from the IBM Data Studio Web console. Then, you can easily allocate this information to all Eclipse-based Data Studio clients.
