What is WDS?

WDS (Wireless Distribution System) is a Wireless distributed System. The WDS function can transmit wired network data through a wireless network as a relay architecture, so that data can be transmitted to another wireless network environment or another wired network. Because a virtual line is formed through a wireless network, it is usually called a wireless bridge function. To put it simply, WDS enables wireless devices to perform bridging and relay between devices.

It is a WDS architecture for bridging two wireless devices. It is widely used and can solve the problems mentioned at the beginning of this article. A wireless router that supports the WDS function connects to the Internet and provides wired and wireless access for several desktops and laptops. Meanwhile, point-to-point wireless bridging is performed between A and B. Wireless Router B provides both wired and wireless access for multiple computers, so that all computers share broadband access in the same LAN.

Another architecture is point-to-point wireless bridging between multiple wireless devices. Center A serves as the center and bridging with four wireless devices, B, C, D, and E. How to configure the WDS function of a wireless router

For a wireless device that performs bridging, You must select the same wireless channel. If the wireless channel of the device is auto by default, you must change the value to 1, 6, and 11 to enable the bridging function; for a bridging wireless device, you need to select the same wireless encryption method and the same key. Currently, many wireless routers only support the WEP encryption method for WDS; if you want the wireless client to roam between devices, set all the wireless devices that are bridging to the same SSID.
