First of all, what I want to talk about here is why we are always unable to accomplish the goal, rather than failing to accomplish the goal on time. The latter has already clearly stated in the Mythical man-month. But there are always some projects in our hands that we don't have enough time, but we give up on them. Programmers always say that the code they write is our child. But why do we abandon children if they have not been raised?
A large part of the reason for personal projects to eventually give up is that you don't really want to complete it. People always come up with a few ideas that they think are good from time to time, especially for programmers, when you have some good ideas, many people will start the project immediately, but haven't thought about the project before it starts. Is it really good? What does it do? After you implement the project, you may find that it is a temporary and reckless idea to start the project. At this time, you feel that you can no longer waste time on this, so you choose to give up.
I think there is no doubt that our preparations for the initial stage are not well done. For example, the planned project is far beyond the capabilities of the current team and individual. When the project progresses, you will find that tasks in each stage cannot be completed on time, and some technical difficulties you have never thought about before cannot be broken through. This initial passion is gradually replaced by frustration. We may use this to encourage ourselves in the middle: stick to it and you will be able to do it. However, such self-encouragement is like an antibiotic, and it works at the beginning. Once our psychology becomes resistant, it will be useless. The final project really failed, so I had to give up.
In addition, others' opinions on your project can easily lead to fluctuations in your mind. For example, if others are expecting your ideas to be implemented, you will be motivated. On the contrary, if others think that your idea is not a good idea at all, you will become frustrated and have a lower motivation. Although others' ideas are not necessarily correct, they do affect our actual activities to a large extent. So we strive to be with those who support you. If you cannot do this, if you have a friend or partner who is always hitting your goals and dreams, you need to be aware of this and continue to be determined on the target. When you begin to realize that others are blocking you from living your own life, you will not allow it to happen.
It is also important that many people do not like to make plans. In their opinion, people with plans are boring and not so angry. They think that conventions and schedules are irrelevant to themselves. I know this very well, because I have been fighting against conventional practices for many years: I am so young and so cool that I don't have to plan anything; spontaneous is my best friend. However, after many years, I discovered that through planning, I can achieve more-through planning, I can finish things and set aside time, make yourself more creative and want to do more. The solution is to set a goal and plan how to implement it. Start from a trivial matter: If you want to start a project, make plans and schedules first. When you complete the first phase, you will find that it is so simple, and then continue to make plans for the next phase. Make regular plans for small steps on your calendar, and you will be surprised to see that more targets can be achieved in your life.
