About partitions and volumes

A primary partition, also known as a primary disk partition, is a type of partition like an extended partition or a logical partition. The primary partition cannot be divided into other types. Therefore, each primary partition is equivalent to a logical disk, but the primary partition is directly divided on the hard disk, and the logical partition must be established in the extended partition ).

1. A hard disk can have one to three primary partitions and one extended partition. It can also have only the primary partition but not the extended partition, but the primary partition must have at least one, A maximum of one extended partition can be created, and a total of four primary and extended partitions can be created. There can be several logical partitions.
2. After the primary partition is split, the remaining parts can be divided into extended partitions. Generally, the remaining parts are all divided into extended partitions, and the remaining parts can be completely divided.
3. Extended partitions cannot be used directly. They must be divided into several logical partitions. All logical partitions are part of the extended partitions. Hard disk capacity = capacity of the primary partition + capacity of the extended partition; capacity of the extended partition = total capacity of each logical partition.
4. A Logical Disk consisting of a primary partition and a logical partition is called a drive or volume ). 5. the active primary partition will become a "Boot partition" (or "Boot partition "), the boot partition is identified by the operating system and the motherboard as the first Logical Disk (in DOS/Windows, it is identified as "drive C:" or "Local disk C :", (c ). Important DOS/Windows boot files, such as boot records, Boot. ini, ntldr, and ntdetect.com, must be placed in the boot partition. 6. inactive primary partitions and extended partitions cannot be seen in DOS/windows, but NT kernel versions such as Windows 2000/Vista can be viewed in disk management.

Dynamic disks have the following features:

The disk capacity can be adjusted without data loss
A volume can accommodate several physical disks The volume type is:-Cross-zone volume-simple volume-image volume-with-zone volume-raid-5 volume Conversion conditions and precautions for converting a basic disk to a Dynamic DiskOnly users in the administrators or Backup Operators group have the right to perform the conversion.
Conversion can only be performed on a single disk, and can only be converted to a basic disk unless all the sectors in the Dynamic Disk are deleted. After conversion to a dynamic disk, no previous partitions are available.
In addition, win2003, win2003, and wixxppro cannot recognize dynamic disks in other operating systems. Therefore, if it is a multi-system boot, switch carefully. Otherwise, some operating systems cannot start normally.
Once converted to a dynamic disk, the original primary partition and logical partition are automatically converted to "simple volume", and the original "Basic volume" is gone.
1 MB of unallocated space is required. What is simple volume
A simple volume is the basic unit in a dynamic disk and is the same as the primary partition in a basic disk. You can select an unspecified space from a dynamic disk to create a simple volume.
Features of simple volumes
Simple volumes can hold the following file systems: fat, FAT32, and NTFS.
NTFS file systems can be expanded, while fat and FAT32 cannot. Note: expansion is to increase the capacity of a simple volume, and the expansion part can be the same physical disk without Assigned space, or different Disks without Assigned space. What is a cross-zone volume?
The so-called cross-Zone Volume refers to a logical volume composed of several unspecified spaces on different disks. That is to say, you can combine multiple unspecified spaces in multiple disks into a cross-zone volume and assign a common drive letter.
Cross-zone volume features can be selected from 2 ~ The unassigned space in the 32 disks constitutes a cross-zone volume.
The size of each part of the cross-zone volume can be different.
Cross-zone volumes are stored in sequence when storing data.
If an error occurs in a part of a cross-zone volume, all data is lost.
Cross-zone volumes can be extended, but must be formatted as NTFS file systems.
Disk usage 100% What is a zone-based volume?
A zone volume is similar to a cross-zone volume. A zone volume is a logical volume formed by Multiple Unspecified spaces on different disks. The difference is that the size of each member is the same.
Features of zone-based volumes
Optional 2 ~ The unassigned space in 32 magnetic disks is used to form a zone volume.
The size of each member is the same.
When the system stores data to a zone volume, it divides the data into 64 KB of the same amount. Poll storage.
Once a zone volume is created, it cannot be expanded.
A zone volume can be formatted as fat, FAT32, and NTFS.
If an error occurs for any member of the zone volume, all data is lost.
The disk usage is 100%, and the read/write speed is increased. What is an image volume?
Combine a simple volume in a dynamic disk with an unassigned space in another dynamic disk or an unassigned space in two non-dynamic disks into an image volume;
The data stored in the two regions of the image volume is identical.
Image volume features
The image volume has only two members, and the size of the two parts is identical.
When creating an image volume, if you select a simple volume and an unspecified space to form an image volume, the system creates the image, the existing data in the simple volume is copied to another member.
In the process of data storage, the two members of the image volume store the same data. When one disk fails, another disk can still be used.
Image volume space usage: 50%
Image volumes can be formatted as fat, FAT32, and NTFS.
Once an image volume is created, it cannot be expanded. What is raid-5 volume
A logical volume that combines three or more dynamic disks with no space assigned, and then assigns the same drive letter.
Raid-5 volume features
A raid-5 volume is composed of 3-32 disks, preferably the same manufacturer, model, and capacity.
Each member of a raid-5 volume has the same capacity.
Divide the data into 64 K equal values, and write the data into each disk together with the parity data.
When a disk fails, the system can calculate the data in the faulty Disk Based on the parity data.
The disk usage is (n-1)/n. Slow writing and fast reading.
Raid-5 volumes cannot be expanded or formatted as LFAT, FAT32, or NTFS.
