In a Word document, to automatically generate chapter numbers before headings, such as "chapter X", "1.1", and so on, you need to set the outline level for headings, and see Settings for styles. Click the format of the menu bar after the title is set-bullets and numbering open the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, and then select the Multilevel Symbol tab.
You can make further settings by selecting a multilevel symbol style, and in this article I choose the second style for further setup. Click the Customize of the Multilevel Symbol tab to open the Custom Outline Numbered List dialog box.
From the dialog box to continue to click Advanced can be seen, we can set the various properties of the number, here I pull out a few more important parameters to explain, please pay attention to understand.
1, number format-level, this is mainly used for multiple sections of the level of the number.
2, link levels to styles, where we number headings, so we link the levels to heading styles, and here the heading style is the heading style that we set in the 1th chapter, if your title is not formatted with the "title" series provided by Word, Link the level to your own new style, the effect is the same, note, is the style, not the style can not link. Link the numbering format level to different heading styles according to the heading style level used in your paper.
3, the normal form of numbering, this is mainly in need of the number mandatory to "1,1.1,1.1.1 ..." and so on. Click OK to return to the Bullets and Numbering dialog box and click OK to complete the automatic numbering of chapter headings.
