Backplane bandwidth is the maximum amount of data that can be throughput between a switch interface processor or an interface card and an information bus. The higher the bandwidth of a switch's backplane, the stronger the ability to process data, but also the cost of design. But how do we see if the backplane bandwidth of a switch is sufficient? Obviously, the method of estimating is useless, and I think it should be considered from two aspects:

1, all port capacity x port number of the sum of twice times should be less than the backplane bandwidth, can achieve Full-duplex non-blocking exchange, proving that the switch has the maximum data exchange performance conditions.

2. Full configuration throughput (MPPs) = Full configuration of the GE ports X1.488mpps 1 Gigabit ports have a theoretical throughput of 1.488Mpps with a packet length of 64 bytes. For example, a switch that can provide up to 64 gigabit ports with a full configuration throughput of 64x1.488mpps = 95.2Mpps can ensure that non-blocking packet swapping is provided when all the port EMA is working. If a switch can provide up to 176 gigabit ports and the claimed throughput is less than 261.8Mpps (176 x 1.488Mpps = 261.8), then the user has reason to think that the switch is designed with a blocking structure. A switch that is generally satisfied is a qualified switch.

The relatively large backplane, the relatively small throughput of the switch, in addition to maintaining the ability to upgrade the expansion of the software efficiency/special chip circuit design problems; the back plate is relatively small. Relatively large throughput of the switch, the overall performance is relatively high. However, backplane bandwidth can be believed that the manufacturer's propaganda, the throughput can not believe that the manufacturer's propaganda, because the latter is a design value, testing is very difficult and the significance is not very large. The switch's backplane rate is typically: Mbps, which refers to the second tier, which uses MPPs for the three-layer exchange.
