After several years of broadband development, the broadband business revenue is increasing year by year, and fixed network operators also regard the broadband business as one of the main means of income in the future.
However, the fact that the ARPU value of broadband users is declining at a rate of about 10% every year has become a resistance to the development of broadband services. How to Increase the ARPU value of users while vigorously developing broadband users, it is an urgent problem facing operators. To effectively increase the ARPU value of broadband users, operators are actively preparing to provide users with a variety of broadband value-added services, while the prerequisite for value-added services is the improvement of broadband access rate.
For devices in the access network range, there are two main considerations for improving the access rate of broadband users: one is the support capability of the access device itself, and the other is the conditions of the user line. Next we will discuss how to optimize the broadband access network based on the current situation of the broadband access network:
I. Support of access devices
According to the operator's plan for the network model for the next few years, and taking into account the proportion of low-end users, high-end users, IPTV users, peak value set line ratio, and other factors, on average, each Broadband User needs at least kbps of access bandwidth. In the early development of broadband, as well as the construction of some module board, DSLAM usually uses STM-1, E1 or FE as the uplink mode, in the absence of IPTV and other value-added business pressure, these three methods can fully meet the needs. However, when each end user needs access bandwidth above kbps, the GE uplink mode must be provided to meet the bandwidth needs of value-added services. Therefore, you need to optimize the current access network:
1) Using STM-1 and E1 uplink DSLAM can only access leased line users, strictly ensure the communication quality of leased line users; other users can flow to GE upstream DSLAM equipment.
2) For DSLAM with FE upstream, if the number of users is less than 200, or in remote areas, the uplink resources are limited, the original uplink mode can be retained; if the number of users exceeds 200, you can merge multiple DSLAM users into one DSLAM device based on the actual situation, and use GE uplink.
3) the original use of STM-1, E1 and FE cascade DSLAM, can be removed according to the specific circumstances, and according to the above principles using different uplink networking.
Because DSLAM will provide access to TriplePlay, apart from the main factor of uplink bandwidth, DSLAM also needs to consider factors such as multicast support, Qos support, network side chain protection, and network security. In addition, in the future, it is possible to activate HDTV for users, and each HDTV will occupy 10 Mbps of bandwidth. Therefore, VDSL2 with two-way mbps bandwidth will be the main direction of DSL development in the future; to protect investment in existing networks and consider application targeting NGN/IMS, it is best for DSLAM to smoothly transition to Access Gateway AG.
Ii. Line Conditions
DSL line quality may be affected by various factors, such as near-end crosstalk, remote crosstalk, interference, and line length. The most important factor is the line length.
To meet the needs of value-added services, the bandwidth for broadband users should be around 4 Mbps. According to the test results of DSLAM in the laboratory, if the ADSL access method is used, the access distance is about 8km. If the ADSL2 + access method is used, the access distance is about 5km. In practical applications, the application environment is complex. To achieve a 4 Mbps access bandwidth, the access distance required must be smaller than the lab test value. Generally, when the access distance is 5km, the user's access bandwidth can reach 4 Mbps.
According to the survey, in China, the proportion of users with access distance within 5km of urban centers accounts for more than 50% of DSL users, while in suburban counties, the proportion of users with access distance within 5km to about 50% of DSL users is rarely up. That is to say, even in urban areas, it is impossible for all users to enjoy value-added services. Of course, it is impossible to increase the ARPU value for operators.
In this case, you can move the DSLAM device down by using an external cabinet or FTTX + DSLAM to stay close to the user and eliminate the adverse effects of the line length, at the same time, it can also solve the problem of Broadband User outgoing rate that troubles operators.
After DSLAM is moved down, DSLAM can be fully close to the user, so that a large access bandwidth can be provided based on a short access copper wire. In addition, when providing hd TV services for users, each channel requires access bandwidth of about 10 Mbps. For these users, SIEMENSIPDSLAMhiX5600 can use VDSL2 technology to achieve two-way M access bandwidth within a short distance. in long distance, it can provide the same access bandwidth as ADSL2 +. In addition, VDSL2 provides "one-machine dual-mode" and is automatically compatible with ADSL2 + CPE, which provides a wider application space for VDSL2.
In the short term, VDSL2 has a great price advantage over optical fiber access and will be mainly applied to commercial or high-end users. In terms of access methods, VDSL2 can completely replace existing LAN access, not only providing the same bandwidth, but also providing a longer access distance. In the future, "FTTX + VDSL2" will be the main application scenario of VDSL2.
To sum up, how to make full use of DSLAM's own capabilities to solve the limitations caused by line conditions, so as to quickly and effectively improve the DSL access rate is the operator's way to attract more users to use broadband, it is also important to increase the ARPU value of broadband users.
