A few months ago, Sarnoff, headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, conducted a video teleconference test with colleagues from a laboratory far away in Bangalore, India, and achieved great success. To this end, Sarnoff decided to further expand Bangalore's investment and R & D efforts.
In fact, this is a manifestation of global research collaboration. Sarnoff is also a microcosm of Western companies' entry into India to earn low-price labor, excellent technical talents and high-quality English talents. World giants such as Microsoft, Google, and IBM are also facing challenges, but they must ensure that their investment prices in India are worth the money and eventually get the expected return.
Krishna Bharat, chief scientist at Google, said: "We have great expectations for Indian innovation. There is no doubt that India has a large number of technical talents ." Not long ago, Google established a new R & D center in India. Sarnoff, a derivative of the TV research laboratory of the RCA company, opened a laboratory in Bangalore a year ago and has more than 70 employees. Currently, Sarnoff is expanding its market to attract 80 more engineering and technical personnel in the next 12 months.
Satyam Cherukuri, CEO of Sarnoff, developed a grand plan to create a new global R & D model in India. He pointed out that the "third" technology R & D wave is on the rise. The first wave was launched in large enterprises. The second wave was first invested by venture capitalists to establish Xingchuang companies. After the development of Xingchuang companies became mature, large companies began mergers and acquisitions. "The third wave of innovation is emerging in any corner of the world. Major companies use their employees or third-party researchers for innovative development ."
Currently, more than 400 engineering and scientific separation tasks of Sarnoff are scattered in Princeton, Silicon Valley, Belgium, Japan and India. Sarnoff will expand its investment in any potential area.
At the same time, Microsoft, Google, and IBM have implemented the same R & D strategy globally. IBM has long established a R & D outpost in New Delhi and added a software laboratory in Bangalore in 2001. In the past 18 months, Google and Microsoft have successively opened R & D laboratories in Bangalore.
These large companies offer local engineering and technical staff an annual salary of-US $. P. Anandan, head of the Microsoft Research Center, said that this is not only a matter of money, but also a matter of technical talents. "India is the place to test new economy and rural development technologies ". Of course, R & D in India is not a challenge. Tim Mitchell, director of Sarnoff Bangalore, said that in the local area, it is difficult for the company to feature supervisors and engineering technicians with rich experience in analog chip design.
It is also difficult for large companies like Google to recruit talents. Earlier last year, Google announced that it could recruit 100 researchers this year, but so far it has been a result of Liao. Bharat, Google's chief scientist, said the company's first focus was on recruiting and building its own senior R & D personnel and leader phalanx. "It is difficult for us to find a senior supervisor with good skills ". To attract top scientists in India, Google promises to give them the same treatment as Google programmers and scientists in the United States. Like Google's R & D staff and programmers, local technical talents can spend 30% of their time developing their own projects in addition to completing the company's defined subjects.
