After the release of the Ubuntu 10.04 platform, the Phoronix website published a comparison test on Mac OS X 10.6.3, Windows 7, and Ubuntu 10.04. After several hundred amendments and improvements were introduced, once again, we pushed the three platforms to the stage of confrontation. I remember that I used six different test systems during the comparison of the three systems, and the test results show the advantages of the system. When competing with the three major operating systems, we use two different systems for comparison. This re-launch of the Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 comparison test, the difference is based on the Lenovo ThinkPad W510 unified test platform, compared to the OpenGL game performance is different.
Lenovo ThinkPad W510 Testing Platform
In the test, we used Lenovo ThinkPad W510 notebook to build a system platform, using an Intel core i7 720QM processor, 4 GB DDR3 system memory, and a 320 GB 7200-to-SATA Hitachi HTS72503 hard drive. In terms of graphics processing, NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M graphics card is used, and 1 GB memory is supported to make the resolution as high as 1600x900. It is worth mentioning that the Intel core i7 720QM processor is the fastest quad-core notebook processor with a maximum frequency of 2.8 GHz and supports 6 MB smart high-speed cache and SSE4.2.
Use Lenovo ThinkPad W510 to test 64-bit Windows 7 Professional Edition and Ubuntu 10.04 respectively. For Windows, NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M graphics cards support 258.96 WHQL drivers, while Linux is only the latest 256.35 driver version. The OpenGL Game Performance Test still passed the Phoronix test suite and runs Nexuiz, OpenArena, Warsow, Lightsmark, Unigine Sanctuary, Unigine Tropics, and Unigine Heaven applications on Linux and Windows systems. Check the performance of Ubuntu and Windows at 1600x900 and a lower resolution respectively.
