Article title: comparison of the three mainstream Linux systems: targeting different user groups. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.

The three desktop systems of Fedora, openSUSE, and Ubuntu Linux look very similar, but they have made some significant progress in differentiation.

At first glance, there is almost no difference between Red Hat's Fedora 12, Novell's openSUSE 11.2, and Canonical's Ubuntu 9.10, the latest versions of Linux. Each time they release the latest version, they use open-source applications based on the latest Linux kernel. Those open-source applications include OpenOffice and Firefox. However, looking at them carefully, there are substantial differences between the three products, and their main user groups are different.

At the underlying system level, all three systems use the 2.6.31 Linux kernel, but on it, the differences between them began to emerge. For example, Fedora and Ubuntu use GNOME 2.28 as the default desktop, while openSUSE uses KDE 4.3.1.

Test Environment

To make a practical evaluation of the three software, we used the Dell think530s for testing. An Intel Pentium E2200 dual-core processor with a 800 GHz front-end bus of MHz is configured for the think530s. The test machine is equipped with 4 GB memory, 3100 gb sata hard drive, and Intel chipset.

At the same time, we also run MEPIS Linux as the host operating system on Sun's VirtualBox 3.0.12 system. Finally, we migrated Fedora and openSUSE to the ThinkPad R61 notebook and Ubuntu to the Dell Mini 9 netbook.

We have no trouble installing the above three Linux systems. In each case, all we need to do is store them on CD, DVD, or USB memory stick, and then start the PC for automatic installation of Linux software.

Similarly, the three software installations have no hardware conflicts with Gigabit Ethernet or 802.11g Wi-Fi. We can easily connect the system to a network running Windows Server 2008 R2, which contains servers such as Windows Server 2003, SUSE Linux 11, and CentOS 5.4. In addition, ia also includes NAS devices, Canon and HP printers, and the entire network is similar to a network environment for small and medium enterprises.

Of course, what version of Linux does the user ultimately choose depends on the user's needs and preferences. However, the following three tests and evaluations will help you make the right choices.

Fedora 12

Paul Frields, the leader of the Red Hat Fedora Project, described "the most important thing for Fedora to attract users is open source, and it can also contribute to open source ." Therefore, if you are a user who strongly supports Linux, you will immediately like Fedora. If you are not, this may not be suitable for your system software.

Fedora currently supports more network options

This does not mean that Fedora is difficult to use. Although it is not as easy for beginners as Ubuntu, most Linux users should have no trouble using Fedora, even if they are not technical developers.
